Almost.
“Coming!” he calls.
He hands me the photograph. His fingers brush mine. “We'll talk later, okay?”
I nod. “Okay.”
He leaves.
And I stare at the photograph a little longer.
Wondering what he was about to say.
It's nearly eleven when I finally get ready for bed.
Darcy has claimed the pillow beside mine, and the house has grown quiet except for the occasional creak of the floorboards.
I change into pajamas, wash my face, and settle beneath the covers with my phone.
There's a message from Bishop.
Ken: You awake?
I smile.
Me: Maybe.
Ken: Was hoping I could steal another kiss.
Me: You already got me in trouble once tonight.
Ken: Worth it.
I bite back a grin.
Before I can answer, voices sound in the hallway.
Declan.
And Bishop.
I pause.
They're standing somewhere near the guest room.
At first, I can't make out what they're saying.
Then Declan's voice gets louder.
“I'm serious, man. What's going on with you and Laney?”
My stomach drops.
Silence.
Then Bishop laughs.
Not his real laugh.
