“And I haven't forgotten our conversation at the Christmas party.”
My stomach flutters.
About publishing.
About my grandmother.
About the books that made me fall in love with stories long before I ever considered writing one myself.
“You mentioned you were finishing a manuscript,” he continues. “How's that coming along?”
“Actually, I finished it.”
“Did you?”
I smile.
“Yes. I'm working through revisions now.”
“Congratulations. That's quite an accomplishment.”
“Thank you.”
“Listen, Delaney, the reason I'm calling is that we have an opening on our editorial team in New York. We're looking for someone with a strong understanding of commercial fiction, particularly romance, and Samantha thinks you'd be an excellent candidate.”
I grip the edge of the counter.
New York.
An editorial position.
At Holden & Montgomery Media.
The kind of opportunity I've spent years dreaming about.
“Are you serious?”
Beau laughs. “Very. I wouldn't be calling otherwise.”
I press a hand against my chest. “Wow. I don't know what to say.”
“You don't have to say anything yet. I'm in Chicago today with one of our senior editors. I'd love for you to come by the Wilder House office this afternoon and talk about the position.”
“Today?”
“If you're available.”
I glance at the clock.
Then at Bishop.
He's watching me, his expression curious.
“I can make that work.”
“Excellent. How does five o'clock sound?”
“Perfect.”
