Beau considers that for a moment.
“Sounds like a wise woman.”
“She was.”
I take a breath.
“I appreciate this opportunity more than you know. But I don't think I can accept a position that requires moving to New York.”
There.
I've said it.
My dream job.
And I'm turning it down.
Except I don't feel like I'm giving up.
I feel like I'm finally making a decision for myself.
Beau studies me for a moment.
Then he glances at Caroline.
“Tell me something, Delaney. How would you feel about staying in Chicago?”
I blink.
“What?”
“We've been discussing expanding the editorial support team at Wilder House. It's a different position, but there's room for growth. Some office time, some remote work.”
Caroline nods.
“And it would allow you to continue developing your own writing.”
My pulse quickens.
“Are you serious?”
Beau smiles.
“Very.”
I look between them.
“And my manuscript?”
“Leave it with us,” he says. “We can't promise anything, but I'd like Caroline to read it.”
“And Delaney, just know I relocated my entire company just because I found my Lucy. The fact that you’re willing to risk it all for love tells me more about what kind of romance author you are than any resume could.”
“Thank you, sir.”
I glance at the clock.
Six fifteen.
