“He was still an asshole.”

I look down at my hands. “You could’ve told me.”

“You would’ve been pissed.”

“I’m pissed now.”

“See? Excellent decision on my part.”

“Were there others?”

Now he avoids eye contact. “Define others.”

“You know exactly what I mean.” I kick my foot toward his thigh. “Did you scare other guys away?”

“I can’t go telling all of my secrets on your first night.”

“It’s technically my second—”

His hand shoots out, and he catches my ankle. Everything stops. His fingers circle the bare skin above my foot. Warm. Callused.

My pulse jumps.

His gaze drops to where he’s holding me. Then lift. Blue eyes meet green eyes.

Neither of us moves. His thumb shifts against my skin. Barely. But I feel it. Everywhere.

And my breath catches.

Bishop clears his throat. “Well, it’s your first night as my roommate, Baby Becks.”

“Temporary roommate.” I pull my foot back and tuck it beneath me. Darcy yawns from the other end of the couch. Traitor.

I reach for my pop mostly because I have no idea what else to do with my hands.

“Why do you still call me that?”

“Call you what?”

“Baby Becks.”

He shrugs. “Beckett was already taken.”

“That is the stupidest explanation I’ve ever heard.”

“It’s the only one I’ve got.”

“Well, I’m not a baby anymore.”

His eyes drop. Not far. Just enough… and stay there half a second longer than they should.

My stomach does a slow, traitorous flip.

He clears his throat and looks back at the television.

“No,” he says quietly. “You’re definitely not.”

Oh. Okay. Well, that’s new.
