I look over at Blaire and try to look innocent.
“Nothing.”
“You keep touching your leg.”
“Pocket.”
“What?”
“My phone keeps sliding weird.”
She looks at me.
I can’t meet her eye so I just stare forward instead.
That doesn't even make sense. Why the fuck did I say that?
“My phone is in my pocket,” I add, somehow making the explanation worse.
“Is there something wrong with your pocket?”
“No.”
“Then why is your phone sliding?”
“I don't know, Blaire. Can we just get out of the truck?” I snap at her. I can’t help it. My skin is buzzing, my heart is pounding, and I might actually throw up right now if she doesn’t drop this.
The expression that crosses her face is pissed, maybe a little hurt, definitely suspicious. But Theo’s patience gives before she can press me further.
“Daddy!”
I look into the rearview mirror and try not to snap at him too. “What, bud?”
“I can't get this.” He's tugging at the chest clip of his car seat.
“Don't mess with it. I'll get you out.”
Blaire reaches for her door.
“Wait.”
She freezes with her hand on the handle. “What?”
I stare at her.
Fuck.
Why did I say that?
Her brows draw together. “Simon?”
“Nothing.”
“What do you mean nothing?”
“Nothing. Go ahead.”
“You just told me to wait.”
