It’s not jealousy.
It’s because she’s Theo’s mom.
That’s all this is.
I don’t want random men around my son someday. I don’t want instability or strangers trying to play house around him.
That’s all.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that part of me still thinks of Blaire as mine even after four years apart.
Chapter eight
Blaire
“And then he just took off running!” Johnathon finishes, laughing hard enough that a couple at the next table glances over.
I laugh too, covering my mouth briefly with my hand.
“I’m serious,” he says, still grinning. “One second I’m turning around to grab Capri Suns and the next my nephew is halfway across a public park with no shoes on.”
“And your sister still lets you babysit after that?”
“Barely.”
Dinner has been… surprisingly good. Really good, actually.
Johnathon is easy to talk to, confident without being arrogant, funny in a natural way that doesn’t feel forced, and attractive enough that my face has been hot since I saw him waiting outside the restaurant for me.
“Speaking of babysitting disasters,” I say with a small laugh, “I should probably text my parents and make sure my son hasn’t convinced them to let him eat frosting straight from the container.”
“Oh, of course,” he says immediately, smiling. “Take your time.”
His attention makes my cheeks warm even more. I smile back before reaching for my phone from my clutch.
Dad
Theo’s asleep already. All the kids crashed out in the living room.
Relief settles in immediately before I notice the messages underneath.
A pile of messages and missed calls from Simon.
My brows pull together as I open them.
