“Very comforting,” he grumbled.
“Poor grumpy werewolf. We’ll be there soon,” she assured him as she pulled out of the tiny parking lot. Theo held his breath as she almost swiped three trash cans and a mailbox on their way out.
“Do you want to play a game?” she asked, flicking her gaze to his and the truck swerved over the yellow line.
He put a hand on the wheel. “Eyes on the road, Fee.”
Phoebe swatted his hand. “I got it.” She straightened the truck out, keeping her attention on the road ahead of them.
“Sure you do.” He pulled his hand away and went back to looking out the window. Towering white pines racing by, and the occasional mailboxes by the side of the road, were the only signs that people lived around here. The oaks and maples had already lost most of their leaves and the sky was a whitish gray, a sure sign that snow was on the way.
A lot had changed in these woods over the years; so much, in fact, that sometimes he barely recognized the world around him anymore. But these trees, this sky, the hills in the distance … These were the same.
His gaze shifted to Phoebe again. She’d slid huge sunglasses over her eyes and was quietly singing along to the slightly fuzzy radio station. She was so blindingly beautiful, he had to look away.
“Okay, let’s play a game.”
“Yay!” She took her hands from the wheel for a split second to clap, and Theo nearly had a heart attack.
“Fee!”
“I know, I know. Hands on the wheel. Eyes on the road. Got it.”
Theo blew out a sigh and Fee smirked.
“Hmm … what should we play? I Spy? No, we’re moving too fast… Never Have I Ever? Really better as a drinking game …”
Theo rested his head back and closed his eyes, waiting as Fee ran through every game option she could think of.
“Oh, I know! Truth or Dare!”
Theo groaned. “No way.”
“Come on! You said you’d play.”
When he opened his eyes, she was looking at him with those big pleading eyes, her sunglasses now pushed to the top of her head.
“Eyes on the road, Fee,” he grumbled, and she complied. “And fine, I’ll play.”
“Yay!”
He was definitely going to regret this.
“Okay, Truth or Dare,” she said.
“Dare.”
“Hmm.” Her brow furrowed.
There weren’t a lot of dare options within the confines of a moving truck, so he was feeling pretty safe.
“I dare you to eat an apple,” she said with a triumphant grin and Theo laughed.
“Was this whole game a ruse to get me to eat fruit?”
“Maybe.”
He shook his head with another laugh and pulled an apple out of Fee’s bag. He took a big bite. “There.”
