They stopped at the diner down the road for breakfast. Theo had a sleeping-next-to-Fee hangover. He needed to refuel before doing anything else today.
She looked at him over her cup of coffee. She didn’t look much better than he did. She’d barely touched her waffles. Actually, he should probably help her out with those. No need to waste food. His omelet was long gone.
He reached across the table and stabbed a hunk of waffle with his fork. He ran it through the syrup and brought it to his lips, finding Fee watching him from across the table.
“You were done, right?”
She just shook her head with a laugh. “Yes, I was done. Have you heard from Rafe?”
Theo glanced at his phone. “Yeah. Knox wasn’t there.”
“He wasn’t?” Fee’s gaze darted to the side and back.
“No. Dina said he was out on a hunt.”
“Hmm.”
Theo narrowed his eyes at her. She was acting weird. She loved waffles. She’d let him finish hers and now she was being dodgy about Knox.
“It’s shady as fuck, if you ask me,” he went on. “What a convenient time for him to be gone.”
Fee shrugged. “Maybe. But it seems like if he was involved, then he’d be around, right? He would have brought Lena to the pack … for her help … right?”
She had started building a tower with creamer cups instead of looking at him while she spoke.
“What’s going on, Fee?”
“With what?” She added a creamer to the top. It teetered there before the whole thing tipped and creamer cups scattered across the table.
“With what? With everything! You got us lost yesterday and now you’re acting like you know something I don’t.”
She widened her eyes in shock. “What are you accusing me of, Theo?”
He opened his mouth and closed it. What was he accusing her of? He didn’t really know. But something felt off. Everything felt off. The careful balance he kept with Fee was threatening to topple just like her tower of creamers. Sleeping in the same bed had been a huge mistake. Waking up next to her had nearly killed him. It was like every guardrail they usually kept around their relationship had been taken down. They were alone. Together. And the reasons for not actually being together were quickly crumbling around him.
“Sorry,” he grumbled. “It was a long night.”
Fee gave him a rueful smile. “Yeah, I know.”
“And now all this stuff about a wolf attack … I don’t know what the hell is going on.”
“I don’t know either. That attack is crazy.” She looked him in the eye when she said it and he believed her. That wolf attack was so out of the realm of what was possible these days that he didn’t know what to do with it. He didn’t know where to file it in his brain.
Maybe he shouldn’t be so surprised.
Ruby was attacked.
Did Theo really think that was going to be an isolated incident? Or had he just hoped it would?
“What is Rafe going to do now?” she asked. “I mean, now that he didn’t find Knox?”
Theo looked at the string of messages Rafe had left on his phone.
Knox is gone.
Fucking bastard.
Have you found anything yet?
