“It’s fine, Fee. You don’t need to defend me. Your mother’s right. I’m Devon’s son. A werewolf. And definitely not good enough for you.”

“Theo—”

“I’m going to go.”

“Mom!”

“I’m sorry, Fee, but he’s dangerous. Did you tell her what happened to that poor human girl who made the mistake of crossing paths with your brother?”

“I know about Scarlet,” she said. Theo had told her all about Rafe’s love. The one killed by wolves.

“And what makes you think you won’t end up any different? Hanging around with him?”

“My father cares about what Rafe does,” Theo snapped. “He doesn’t give a shit about what I do. That’s the difference.”

“Theo, please.” Fee tried to grab his hand, but he pulled it away, softening only when he saw the hurt look on her face.

“I gotta go, Fee.” He leaned down and whispered in her ear. “I’ll see you later.” His lips brushed her cheek and then he was striding out the door.

She blew out an angry breath and then turned to her mother.

“Oh, Fifi,” Runa said, wrapping her arms around her, the multitude of bangles on her wrists jangling. “I know all about picking the wrong men. And that one is definitely wrong for you.”

Fee sighed, leaning into her mother’s warmth.

“But what if he’s not?”

“Trust me, Fee.” Her mother gave her one more squeeze before pulling back and looking Phoebe in the eyes. “Don’t get dazzled by those abs. Werewolves are no good.”

She pressed a kiss to Fee’s head and went back to putting away her finds from the farmer’s market.

For the first time in her life, Phoebe disagreed with her mother.

One thing she knew for certain.

Theo was good for her.

Chapter Thirteen

“There it is!” Runa’s arm shot out in front of him, her pointing finger nearly disjointing his nose. “Right over there. Can you see it?”

“Of course I see it,” he grumbled, pulling the truck down the driveway to the little wooded resort.

Grimm’s Cottages, the sign read in chipped blue paint.

Cute.

Two rows of small white cottages with multi-colored shutters stood in the woods like they’d grown up out of the soil. What an absurd place, but he was glad they were finally fucking here.

It had taken several hours, multiple wrong turns, and an inordinate amount of bathroom breaks before they had finally arrived, and Theo couldn’t be in this truck for another minute.

“Thank the goddess we made it!” Runa said, dramatically. And for once Theo agreed. Thank every damn goddess that this ill-fated journey was over.

“It’s so cute here,” Fee said, her eyes taking in the quaint cabins lit up for Christmas. They’d even strung white lights over some of the small pine trees around the property.

He dreaded the next words out of Fee’s mouth before she even said them.

“We might have to stay over.”
