“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Fee asked and Rafe narrowed his eyes at her.

“Why wouldn’t it be?” he snapped.

A low growl built in the back of Theo’s throat, warning Rafe to watch how he talked to her.

Fee huffed. “If you’re going to go in there all confrontational, he’s not going to tell you anything anyway.”

“Then I’ll go with him,” Theo said.

Fee rolled her eyes. “Like you’ll be any better.”

“Do you want to be a little more helpful?” Rafe said.

“Watch how you talk to my daughter!” Runa said, rising from her chair.

“A woman is missing and you nymphs think it’s a fucking game!”

“Rafe…” Theo warned.

“Everyone just stop!” Ruby slammed her hands on the table, rattling teacups and cake plates. “Just stop it, please. I need to find my sister and every day that we don’t, I lose a little more hope that we ever will, and instead of having a dream about where the hell she is, I’m dreaming about this grove and I’m sorry but I just…” she trailed off, her bottom lip quivering until Rafe knelt in front of her and gathered her in his arms.

“I’ll go with you to the pack,” Fee said quietly. “I’m better at these things.”

Runa raised an eyebrow, an unspoken question passing between them. Fee shook her head.

Theo didn’t have long to think about it before Rafe was rushing Ruby out the door, barking orders to Fee and Theo to follow along as soon as possible.

Chapter Twenty-Five

“I am starting to deeply regret letting you have all the music control,” Theo grumbled from the driver’s seat.

Was it just yesterday that she was relieved their little road trip was over? It probably wasn’t the smartest move to sign them up for more, especially after what had happened between her and Theo last night … and this morning … but what was she supposed to do? Ruby was suffering, worrying over her sister, which Fee still felt guilty about. And now Ruby was having dreams about the grove being destroyed.

Leaving Fee stuck between wanting to help Ruby and wanting to help … well, herself, not to mention everyone else in these woods, too!

As the days went by it was getting harder and harder to convince herself that she was doing the right thing. Was it still the right thing if she was hurting people?

And what about Theo? Wasn’t she bound to hurt him too?

Every time he looked at her today, his expression was a mix of awe and lust. Things had escalated so much at breakfast they hadn’t had a chance to talk anymore about this whole trial period thing, and she didn’t know how to feel about any of it.

And now he was anxious about returning home and taking it out on her impeccable taste in music. She cleared her throat. “Dolly Parton is a national treasure.”

Theo huffed a sigh, but a peek from the corner of her eye showed he was biting back a smile.

“Is that why you went blonde? Channeling Dolly?”

She ran a hand over her short spikes. “I think I would need a lot more of it to channel Dolly.”

Theo snorted.

“Just needed a change.”

It was what she always said when she dyed her hair or chopped it all off or bought an entirely new wardrobe at the thrift store. But Theo surprised her this time by saying, “Me too.”

“Oh yeah?”

“That’s what the trial period is for, right? A change between us?” He flicked his gaze to her, his attention so intense that she was relieved when he had to focus on the road.
