“I can’t … that’s not … possible.”
She hadn’t planned to ask him to leave his family, but she hated seeing him this way. And she missed him. And they were hurting him.
And would it really be so bad if he did?
“You could stay here,” she said, her voice quiet and Theo’s face crumpled. She wanted to apologize, to take it all back, to pretend she’d never said it. Just suggesting it had caused Theo too much pain.
She was being crazy. Wishing for something that would never work.
“I don’t think I can, Fee.” He was moving now, away from her, putting his T-shirt back on, leaving. She put a hand on his arm and he froze.
She held his gaze, wishing things were different, wishing there was another way for them.
Wishing for things that would never work.
“It’s okay. I get it.” Just take it back, just pretend you didn’t say it, you didn’t wish for it. “It would never work anyway,” she said with a forced laugh. “Imagine me and you as roommates!”
And for a brief second it looked as though Theo was imagining it and it looked like he wanted it, too.
But then he blew out a sigh of relief, happy she had given him an out.
“Yeah,” he said. “It wouldn’t work.”
“Right.” And it felt so much worse hearing it from his mouth than her own.
“But I’m tired of not seeing you,” he said, grabbing her hands. “I hate not seeing you.”
Fee smiled because what else could she do? “Okay, so keep seeing me, then.”
“Okay.” He leaned down and planted a kiss on her nose. “Thanks for nursing me back to health.”
“Anytime.”
Unfortunately, anytime came way too soon.
“Phoebe? Hey, Phoebe!”
A werewolf was yelling outside her window, but it wasn’t Theo. Fee peeked out and saw Ryder standing beneath her tree. She uncloaked the house and came outside.
“What’s up?”
Ryder was panting, clearly having run here.
“It’s Theo.”
Fee’s heart crashed into her stomach.
“What’s wrong?” She’d just seen Theo last week. She thought of his injuries. Dread spiked through her.
Ryder sucked in a breath. His face was red, his hair a tangled mess. What the hell was going on?
“He’s fighting with Rafe and Knox.”
“He’s always fighting with Rafe and Knox.”
Ryder shook his head, the desperation clear in his eyes. “I don’t think they’re going to stop. Not until … it’s over for two of them.”
“What the actual fuck?” Fee was already scrambling down from her tree. “What do you mean?”
