Theo grinned at him in thanks and Ryder smiled back.

Theo had a lot of regrets about the last year of his life and one of them was cutting off contact with the friend that always had his back.

That was a mistake.

And maybe one of the things he could finally fix.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

After their mostly warm welcome, the pack was quick to inform them that they didn’t know where Knox had gone but that they were sure he would be back soon.

It sounded like bullshit to Phoebe, but it served her purpose just fine.

Rafe had stalked off with Ruby to take over Knox’s trailer, proclaiming that they weren’t leaving until he got back. Which apparently meant she and Theo were also staying.

Luckily, they’d also been offered a trailer because it was too damn cold for sleeping outside. She wasn’t covered in fur like some people.

Theo was still outside talking to Ryder and some of the other wolves he grew up with, and Fee didn’t know what state he’d be in when he was done. She didn’t know how he was feeling about this family reunion or where they stood on this whole trial-period thing. She didn’t know how she felt about any of it. Other than … anxious.

She paced the small rectangular living space. A living room that had seen better days was attached to a kitchen that had also seen better days. Everything was a bit rough around the edges but patched up just enough to work. She wondered how many people had lived here over the years. She peeked into the one bedroom with the one bed.

This trial period may be about to ramp up whether they were ready or not.

And then what? They hadn’t found the answer in ten years. How would they find it now?

Theo came in, vibrating with energy.

“Hey.” He planted a kiss on her nose. His lips were cold from the outside and Fee crinkled her nose in response.

“Hey.”

“Ryder thinks we should go out and see if we can find Knox. Take a little run around the area. He knows Knox’s favorite spots.”

“Oh…”

“What?”

“Well, it’s dark.”

“So? Wolfy vision, remember?”

“What does Rafe think?”

“He’s going to stay here with Ruby. But I thought maybe you could come. You can spot things in these woods better than anyone.”

“But the humans. You can’t shift, remember. It’s not safe.”

Theo huffed his impatience. “We’re far from town. We’ll be fine.”

“Maybe we should just wait here until Knox comes back.”

“Fee.” Theo squeezed the bridge of his nose. “We’ve gotten completely off-track. We need to find Knox, and the best way to do that is to go look for him. And my pack can help.”

“Oh, they’re your pack again?”

He blew out a harsh breath. She wasn’t proud of herself for provoking him, but she was getting desperate.

“Yes, they are. Are you coming or not?”
