“Usually you tell me whether there were complications.”

“There weren’t.”

Mathias exhales slowly. “Are you alright?”

“Fine.”

“That didn’t sound convincing.”

“I’m tired.”

“You don’t usually sound like this when you’re tired.”

“How do I usually sound?”

“More annoyed.”

I smirk. “I can work on that.”

Mathias doesn’t laugh. “Did something happen?”

I glance toward the hallway again. “No.” The answer comes easily. “Job’s handled.”

“Rossi doesn’t need to worry?” he asks.

“No.”

That part is true.

“I’m going to shower and sleep,” I tell him.

The line is quiet for a few seconds, then Mathias replies, “Alright.”

“Look, I don’t want to hear from anybody tomorrow. If it’s not life or death, don’t call me.”

Mathias gives a short laugh. “You realize most things I call you about are life or death.”

“Then determine whether someone will actually die if you wait twenty-four hours.”

“And if the answer is yes?”

“Call.”

“What if Kenny fucks something up?”

“Hell no. Let him die.”

“That would upset his mother.”

“She’ll recover. I hear Kenny’s younger brother is promising.”

Mathias laughs properly this time. The familiar sound loosens something in my chest. “Fine,” he says. “Take your day.”

“Thank you.”

“But Adrien?”
