“Uh-huh.”
“Uh-huh, what? You were thinking about that conversation? About what I asked you?” He walked over and sat on the bed facing her. Even the bed creaked slightly under his weight.
God, was nothing in this house built to last? Although to be fair, a lot of things in this house were older than he was.
“About what you asked me? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He reached out and hit the top of her head with his finger. “No lying, Little girl. That’s a rule.”
She stared up at him with those big blue-green eyes. “Will you be my Daddy?”
32
What had she just done? Had she seriously just asked him to be her Daddy? Had she lost her mind?
That was it, wasn’t it? She was going insane. She had to be.
Why had she just blurted that out?
She’d been feeling so carefree and relaxed that she’d just said whatever came into her mind, without fear of somebody making fun of her, taking offense, or being upset.
Was it the sleeping pill? Maybe that was part of it.
Honestly, it had felt amazing. Like years of concern and worry had lifted off her shoulders, and she could just be herself without any worries. But that wasn’t reality, was it? That wasn’t life. At some stage, you had to come crashing back down to reality, and she guessed that had happened when she’d crashed off the roof, or when she climbed into bed and then asked him that ridiculous question.
Honest to God, what had she been thinking? She hadn’t been able to answer the question about whether she was a Little or not, and yet she just went ahead and asked him that.
It was becoming clear to her that she most certainly needed an exit plan. The world had not opened up beneath her and swallowed her whole. The aliens had not invaded. She was not stuck in a nightmare or having an out-of-body experience. Therefore, she was going to have to come up with an exit plan herself.
Because there was no possible way that she could ever be in his presence again.
It just couldn’t happen because she would perish from complete and utter embarrassment.
His mouth opened, then closed.
Was this the first time that he’d ever been rendered speechless? Probably. She’d obviously shocked him.
Well, it wasn’t every day that you got asked if you would be someone’s Daddy now, was it?
“Just go,” she said, and then she slid fully under the covers. Yes, she knew she was running away again, but who could blame her?
No one would stick around to find out the answer to that, unless they thought it was going to be the answer they wanted. And she knew it wasn’t going to be, not by the way he hesitated over his words.
Ammo obviously had no idea what to say.
Which meant it wasn’t a simple yes. Of course not. He didn’t want to be her Daddy.
He probably wasn’t even a Daddy. Kirsten likely had that wrong, and really, what did she know? She knew nothing about Daddies and Littles, other than what they had both read in books. So why on earth had Aimee listened to her?
Because she was an idiot, that’s why. Because she was an idiot who had hoped that Kirsten was right, and that he was actually a Daddy.
So she could fantasize about him being her Daddy.
But a fantasy should just stay that. Because even if he was a Daddy that didn’t mean he wanted to be her Daddy, now did it?
There had been a couple of times she’d thought he might be attracted to her, that he might want her. But who was to say she was right? She might have been thinking about him kissing her, and he was thinking that her breath stunk.
Oh God, her breath didn’t stink, did it? She huffed into her hand. No, it was good.
