Daddy’s Fortitude

“Yeah,” he said huskily. “I liked that too.”

“Now, do you want to play with the clay with me?” She kneeled back in front of the coffee table.

To her surprise, he actually dropped down next to her. She hadn’t been expecting him to play. Ammo didn’t seem the type who’d be happy playing with clay.

“What are you going to make?” he asked.

“It’s gonna be a secret but you will soon see.”

And she got to work humming under her breath happily.

Ammo thought she was adorable as she played with the clay while dressed in her Garfield nightgown and robe. He still couldn’t believe that she was his.

That she was always going to be his.

Because he definitely was never going to let his girl go.

She had a small smile on her face as she got to work making something with the clay. He was glad that she liked everything he’d chosen.

He rolled out a snail with his clay. Then a snake. He wasn’t feeling that imaginative. In fact, he wasn’t certain that he’d ever really been that imaginative.

“Very good, Daddy. A snail and a snake. Very well, hmm, interesting?”

Interesting?

“Well, I’ll be interested to see what you create,” he told her.

“It’s going to be a masterpiece, Daddy. You’re going to be in awe of what I create. The best thing you’ve ever seen.” He gave her a surprised look at the confidence in her voice, but it was rather cute.

“I’m going to go make us some dinner. When I come back, I’ll inspect this masterpiece.”

“Okay, Daddy, but prepare to have your socks knocked off you,” she replied.

He made them a simple dinner with some Hamburger Helper pasta and pasta sauce. Then he sprinkled cheese on top and carried the bowls back out into the living area.

“Just in time, Daddy. I have finished. Ta-da.”

She waved her hand at the coffee table, on top of which were three lumps of clay of varying sizes. He wasn’t entirely certain what exactly she’d done to them, just sort of rolled bits up and squished them together.

“Aren’t they marvelous?” She smiled happily.

“Marvelous,” he repeated. “What are they?”

She put her hand on her chest, letting out a gasp of shock. “Daddy, what do you mean, what are they? Can’t you tell?”

“No,” he told her. “I can’t tell.”

“Daddy, what are you saying? That my clay masterpiece is no good? How could you not know what it is?”

“Do you want the truth or do you want a lie?”

“I want the truth, of course.”

“Then I have no idea what it is. It looks like just lumps of clay pushed together.”

“That’s just rude. Other people would know what it is. You’ve just got no eye for clay.”

Well, he guessed that was true.
