“What about you two?” I ask her. “How’s wedding planning going?”

Pure joy brightens her face. The same way it did when she and Nico told us the news after their recent trip to Greece. “Amazing,” she gushes. “I mean, it helps that it’s the smallest, most casual wedding ever, but it really has been fun planning everything.” An exhale rushes past her lips. “I can’t believe I’m getting married.”

“I can’t believe you’re making me wear a dress,” I tease.

“I let you wear black as a bridesmaid!” Scarlett laughs. “I compromised.”

“And I appreciate that,” I say through a laugh. “I’m pretty sure Lucas’s head would explode if I showed up in a pale-pink dress.”

Scarlett lifts an eyebrow. “It would definitely explode, but not in the way you’re thinking.”

I look down to hide my blush. In a way, I’m glad Lucas’s feelings for me are obvious to others, because it makes me feel better about my own obsession with him.

“Have you gone to the courthouse yet?” I ask to change the subject. “I know there’s paperwork and stuff you have to do before the wedding.”

“Not yet. We’re going next week.”

“Will you take Nico’s name?”

A sly smile tugs at her mouth, her eyes sparkling.

“Actually, he’s taking mine.”

I cock my head. “Really? Why?”

“Because I’m never putting another price on my name ever again.”

I let out a whistle when I realize what she’s saying.

“Damn. So he’s taking your name instead? I knew I liked that guy.”

Scarlett sighs happily. “I know. He’s amazing.”

“Nicholas Adler… Has a nice ring to it.”

The name seems to summon the man himself, because Lucas and Nico choose that moment to reappear from the office. Predictably, Nico goes right back to Scarlett’s side.

Lucas, though, stays standing in the doorway. He has his phone pressed to his ear and he’s frowning. “What’s going on?” he asks. Then his eyes go wide.

“What do you mean, someone dumped a dog? How injured? Are you fucking kidding me?”

We all stiffen at that. Someone dumped a dog?

We don’t hear the rest of the conversation because Lucas wanders into the kitchen, his words quiet and furious. We all wait not-so-patiently for him to finish.

“What happened?” Nico demands when Lucas ends the call. “That was Alexander?”

Lucas nods, looking stressed. “Someone dumped an injured golden retriever on his property last night. He took it to the vet this morning and they said the dog’s ACL is torn. She needs surgery.”

“Oh my God,” Scarlett gasps. “That’s terrible! Can we help?”

Lucas rubs his forehead with a wince. “Yeah. I told him Nico would text a list of what he should grab at PetSmart, since you guys know dogs. Alexander has no idea what he’s doing.”

“On it,” Nico says, already pulling out his phone.

Just then, the front door buzzer sounds. Lucas quickly hits the intercom button and asks, “What’s up, Sam?”

“Hello, Mr. Price. Your parents are here, and they asked if someone could come down to help with their bags? Your mother won’t let me help.”
