"I can level mountains."
"That's... probably not something we'll need."
"I can shatter souls."
She nodded politely. "Useful."
"It is."
Another thoughtful silence. Then, "Can you heal Mrs. Wilton?"
In hindsight, I should have seen that coming. "Yes."
Her face lit up. "Really?"
"Of course."
"Oh, wonderful! Let's go."
"I said I could." She blinked. "I didn't say I would."
"But..." She frowned as though I'd just informed her puppies were illegal. "...why not?"
"Because I'm a demon."
She continued staring. She searched everywhere except the one place I actually stood. Humans did that a lot. They assumed anything important had to be complicated. Usually, it was standing right in front of them.
I waited. Convinced my last answer had explained everything. Apparently not.
"So?"
"So..." I spread my hands. "We don't generally heal people."
"You could make an exception."
"I could."
"You should."
"I shouldn't."
"It would be nice."
"I'm a demon."
"So you've mentioned."
"I don't do nice."
"I think you could."
"I assure you, I could not."
"You haven't even met her."
"I don't need to."
"She makes blackberry pie."
