“I wasn’t going to argue,” Mrs. Bennet said quietly. “I need people that speak their minds. If you’re intimidated by me, then you aren’t at your full potential.”
Her platitudes did nothing for me. “Then we need another course of action. It can’t all lay on us.”
“I have an idea,” Graham piped up again. “It’s what Miss Meadows said before. We’re only human, we can’t be machines.”
It was getting harder and harder not to roll my eyes. Mason’s hand distracted me as he rested it on my shoulder. My body melted with the memory of what we’d done just a short time ago.
“Get to the point,” Nicole said. Unlike the rest of us, she and Candice remained in perfect physical condition. Evidence of either spending too much time in front of mirrors or, in Candice’s case, plastic surgery.
“The point is, whoever did this was human. That means that he or she can and will make mistakes and give him or herself away. We just need to look for those clues.”
“So we should all turn detective?” Nicole did roll her eyes that time.
“It’s easier than fighting a machine,” I said, tired of her bullshit.
“Dr. Doyle,” Mrs. Bennet said, redirecting everyone’s attention. “I’d like you to go over every participant’s medical files and look for anything that might lead to a psychotic break. Cross reference with Dr. Meadow’s list of technologically capable candidates and see if you find anything.”
“Glad to have something useful to do,” the doctor agreed, pulling a hand back through his hair.
“Anyone have anything else to add?” Mrs. Bennet asked. When no one moved, she said, “Dismissed. Alert me immediately if you find or think of anything suspicious.”
Mason hovered over me. “How about dinner tonight? So we can take our time,” he asked, low, so only I could hear.
As much as I looked forward to spending more time with him, I had another person I needed to talk to first. “Sure,” I said with a shiver, thinking about the elevator. “My room. Eight o’clock.”
I barely heard his murmured acknowledgement. I was too busy following the doctor toward the elevator.
