A Matter of Time

“All right then, what is it you need help with? Or was that a lie to get Teddy back to bed?” She leaned so far forward her breasts were practically in his face. He deserved to sweat a little.

“Remember those people I told you about?” he asked, trying but failing to keep eye contact.

It almost made her laugh with triumph. Sadie nodded. “The one hundred people whose lives were in danger. Did you save them?”

“Well, I think they’re going to be okay, but I need to find a way to let them visit here without anyone else noticing, and I was hoping you could help me.”

Sadie laughed again, but this time it wasn’t out of humor. “You want me to sneak a whole wagon train full of people into town with no one noticing? Did you fall on your head?”

Fingers fiddling with some of the objects on the table, Wally focused on anything but her. “Maybe. But if I do this, then I don’t get in trouble with my superiors, and I have an excuse to see more of you.”

“There ain’t much more of me to see than you already have,” Sadie said, flicking the brim of his hat.

“I disagree,” Wally said in a low voice that made her stomach heat up.

“We could…think about it while we do other things,” Sadie offered.

Wally took off his hat and fanned himself. “Sadie you can be very difficult. I really need your help here.”

“You started it this time,” she said, sitting up straight.

When the only response was Wally’s pleading puppy eyes, she sighed.

“All right, Wally, I’ll put the coffee on, and you get your thinking cap straight. But if you want my help, you owe me something in return.”

“What sort of something?” he asked, and she figured he was right to feel suspicious.

Sadie made an effort to seem nonchalant as she prepped the coffee. “Well, how are your drama skills, Wally? Cuz I need you to help me play a part.”

“And what part is that?”

“The part of my fiancé.”
