Teddy gave her a lopsided grin as he climbed on the horse after her. “I promise to try and stay out of danger.”
“That’s my boy.”
Sadie took the reins and turned Target back toward the TCR, patting her flank.
“What about Caroline, Ma?”
“Well, if the scorpions and rattlers don’t get her, then I’ll send someone back for her. Now hang on tight.”
Sadie leaned forward and urged Target into a gallop back toward the resort and away from the setting sun. They reached it in a matter of minutes, but it felt like hours to Sadie, a heavy weight baring down on her chest. She left Target outside the entrance and led Teddy back up inside the ship. For being from the future, these folks were either far too trusting or had no concept of crooks and sneaks anymore.
What she found was Nicole and Jackson still on the floor, unmoving, but even more shocking was the mule standing above them and chewing on the brightly colored fabric of Nicole’s skirts.
“Darcy!” Sadie exclaimed, rushing forward to shoo her away so she could kneel beside them.
True to Caroline’s word, they each had a strong pulse. “They’re alive. But how do we wake them?”
Teddy rushed past and busied himself at a small console to the side of all the screens. He pushed a button and spoke into the wall. “Hydropod, please.”
Sadie’s mouth fell open as he ran back over with what looked like a big bubble of water. He grinned, some of his wild hair flopping in his eyes. “I learned a few things while Captain McGovern showed me around the ship earlier.”
He leaned down and poured water over the two unconscious bodies. The two woke with a start.
“What the hell?” Nicole shrieked, feeling at her face and hair, then resting her gaze on Sadie.
Ears pinning back, big brown eyes going wide, Darcy backed up several steps. Thankfully, she seemed too startled to let out a bray, otherwise, she may have scared poor Nicole to death.
Sadie grabbed Nicole’s arm and helped yank her to her feet. “We don’t have a lot of time. We need to get upstairs to Wally.”
“We need a plan. We can’t just go charging in,” Jackson said, shooting his girlfriend a knowing look.
Nicole tapped her full lips, gaze resting on Darcy with only the slightest look of confusion. Then her eyes brightened. “They’re men, right? We give them what they want…and then some. Follow me.”
“Where are we going?” Sadie asked, trailing behind as Teddy urged Darcy forward.
“Lacey’s costume shop. We need to dress the part.”
