Burke grinned. “Maybe checking the room over will tire her out, and then we can tire each other out.”
“I like that plan.”
He kissed her until Frizzle barked, trying to climb their legs. Rissa pulled out a ball, and soon the Yorkie was racing around the room, chasing it and bringing it back for another throw.
“How do you feel about tackling Jay’s room tomorrow?”
He shrugged. “I’m ready. Even if we don’t find any more clues to the mystery, it’ll give everyone a focus for the morning. Hopefully, Marcus figures something out while we dig into Jay’s past, and you create a new world with Olivia.”
She grinned at him. “I still can’t believe I know Livie Sanchez. Kids are going to go nuts over this unit.”
Olivia used a pen name to protect her privacy, so no one initially connected their Olivia with the fantasy author.
When Frizzle started yawning, they took her outside for a pit stop and then returned to his room. Frizzle headed straight to her bed and flopped down.
Burke locked the door with a grin, then turned to find Rissa lifting her sweater over her head. His blood fired, and he crossed to cup her breasts in his hands, thumbs teasing her nipples. “Playtime.”
She sparkled at him as she tossed the sweater onto the dresser. “You didn’t get much sleep last night. Are you sure you’re up for it?”
As her grin widened, she reached for his erection, which was straining against his jeans.
“I’m good.” His voice was a rumble.
Then their hands moved, bumping and fumbling until they were both naked, and he tumbled them onto the bed.
He could get used to this.
Burke surveyed Jay’s room. His siblings ranged behind him, Boomer at Amber’s side. Gray kissed Amber. “I’ll be downstairs if you need me.”
Amber nodded. “I’ll be fine.”
Jolie laughed. “Of course you will. You’re probably the strongest person I know, but Sprout there is getting big.”
Amber patted her rounded belly. “Almost time to meet the sprout.”
Burke didn’t know if Amber and Gray knew the gender of the baby, but they hadn’t revealed it if they had. It would be fun to meet his niece or nephew. Her due date was still more than a week away, but he’d been told that babies often had their own agendas, and this one could arrive any time.
Knox slapped Burke’s shoulder. “Let’s do this.”
Burke walked inside and to the desk. He pulled out the chair and patted it. “For the mama and the sprout.”
Amber grinned and lowered herself to the chair. “Don’t mind if I do.”
Jolie sat on the bed. “Should we divide and conquer?”
Burke shrugged. “Probably. I’m sure the desk drawers are the most likely spot for the answers we’re looking for, but the closet and dressers might hide secrets, too.”
Lawson nodded. “I found pictures of Jay and the truck in a shoebox. Knox found more in a drawer. Could be anywhere. I’ll take the closet.”
Knox said he’d take the chest of drawers and the nightstand, leaving him, Jolie, and Amber with the desk.
The desk was old. “Looks handcrafted.”
Amber smiled. “Like almost everything here and in the inn. Aisling Gallagher said most of it was crafted by a master.”
Burke hadn’t met Aisling yet, but knew she was one of the team from Midnight Lake. Aisling was a carpenter who specialized in restoring old homes, like the enormous lodge out at the lake.
The desk had a long middle drawer with three more down each side. He pulled out two and put them on the bed. “Jolie and I can start with these; why don’t you do the top drawer, Amber?”
