She nodded into his chest. “I will, but I’m fine. Tell me what happened.”
They walked back to where the others stood. The men all moved automatically to block her from the asshole’s view.
Lawson frowned at her. “Are you well enough to be out here? You banged your head pretty hard.”
“I’m good. My head’s clearing and the dizziness is gone.”
Knox crossed his arms over his chest. “But?”
Rissa smiled. “But I have a headache, and I promise to go inside if anything feels worse.”
Burke grinned as all the men nodded at her words. They were a protective bunch, and he knew they’d all keep an eye on her as well.
Gray caught Rissa up on what he, Seth, and Boomer had done.
She rubbed Boomer’s head. “Thank you, Boomer. You’re amazing. Actually, you’re all amazing. Thank you.”
The group all nodded in agreement with her words.
Marcus pulled out his phone and answered a call. The police chief left his deputy in charge of the prisoner and moved off to the side to speak to the caller. The only one of them who moved or made a sound was Boomer, who switched his attention from the asshole to the inn and back again. The rest of them tried to hear whether Arrow had news.
After a minute, Marcus smiled and hung up. He moved in their direction. “Okay, I’ve got a few updates. First, the police in Carolina have found Dan Coulson, and he’s in custody. A few days ago, he assaulted another woman, and he’s facing several charges. He’s violated his parole and will remain in custody for a long time.”
Burke hugged Rissa to his side as she spoke. “In jail’s exactly where he belongs. I hope the woman is going to be okay.”
“I don’t have details, but I’ll find them for you after we get this asshole into a cell and formally charged.”
Burke rubbed his hand up and down Rissa’s shoulder. “Any information on his prints?”
Marcus nodded. His grim smile didn’t bode well for the asshole. Good. “His name is Victor Anderson.”
Burke grinned. “That can’t be a coincidence.”
Rissa nodded. “He’s got to be a relative of Curt. Did Joel ever mention a Victor?”
Burke shook his head. “Not that I remember, but he has a large family. He often said that our five siblings must have made for a nice, quiet household. He has seven brothers and sisters, and they all have kids.”
Marcus nodded. “Won’t take long to track that down. This guy has a rap sheet for breaking and entering. He’s never committed a violent crime before, but he’s been charged with theft and possession of stolen goods several times. Want me to ask him some questions before I take him to the Phail Jail?”
Rissa looked up at Burke. “I’m ready if you are.”
In other words, he wouldn’t be able to stash her away in the inn. She was part of it now. The man had tried to blow up her home with her and Frizzle inside, so she had as much right as he did to talk to him.
Burke kissed her softly. “Let’s do this.”
Marcus looked at the rest. “Stand here and look intimidating.”
Burke chuckled before clearing his face to turn to the man. His brothers and buddies could handle the intimidation part without a problem. Their family had been threatened. The man had shot at them. Victor Anderson was lucky he was upright and uninjured. This group was honorable, but the man couldn’t know that.
Anderson’s eyes flickered up to Marcus, then to him and Rissa, then to the men behind them. Fear showed in his eyes and in the way his body shuddered. Good.
Arrow stopped in front of him and stared him down. It only took a few seconds to crack. “It’s not my fault. He made me do it. He’s the one you need to arrest.”
That was a far better start than Burke had expected. He squeezed Rissa’s hand, and she squeezed back without taking her eyes off Anderson.
Marcus waited. Anderson shifted on his feet a few times, and then his eyes moved over them all. “He said if I didn’t, he’d kill me and it wouldn’t be quick.”
Bullshit or the truth? Hard to tell. He might be making it up to get Marcus to go easier on him. Burke studied the man, tried to find a commonality between him and Curt, but he couldn’t spot anything. Curt took after Joel, tall, average build, sharp jaw and nose. This man was shorter with softer features. Nothing about him looked like either of the Andersons. Maybe the name was a coincidence, but he doubted it.
