“Wake the fuck up.” Someone slapped my cheek before their fingers dug into the sides of my face.
My eyelids dragged open, but my head was still lolling to the side. I'd transitioned between forms far too many times tonight, and my body was paying for it. The exhaustion depended on how long I stayed in each form and how often I switched between them.
Tonight, I'd pushed myself too far.
Five fucking times.
Oh, and I pulled someone else into my void form with me.
That was far too much.
If I’d just stayed in my void form, I wouldn’t feel like I’d been hit by a semi-truck, dunked in an ice bath, and thrown into a fire.
Yes, I’d be tired, but not like this.
The small hand slapped me again. “Xeniya Morozova, if you don’t fucking move now…”
“Did you just slap me?” My voice sounded thick, as if someone had drugged me. “Twice?”
“No, I slapped you three times,” the woman in a black balaclava said. “It’s unfortunate you didn’t feel it the first time.”
“Why are you here, Neeve?”
“Isn’t it obvious? To rescue you, as usual.” She hooked her arms beneath my armpits and tried to haul me up. “Who saves a ghost?” She was far too pleased with herself when she answered, “A doctor. Obviously.”
“Are you going to tell a terrible joke? Like a ghost, a doctor and a mafia boss walk into a bar?” I asked, trying to help her pull me to my feet.
“I might if you don’t stop being so utterly maddening.” She grunted. “Remind me to bring my brother next time.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because Callum is at the Gilded Dandelion, staring at his newest obsession.”
I scrunched my eyebrows. “Who is that?”
“The red-headed singer. He saw her the night of your engagement party and has been stalking her ever since.”
“Why can’t mafia men just be normal?” I moaned. “And the other brother?”
“He’s in Boston brokering a deal. Callum was supposed to join him, but with the stalking and all, he stayed here.” Neeve laughed and, with a big huff, lifted me fully to my feet. “Please tell me you can move your legs. I’m not carrying you all the way to the car.”
I wiggled my toes, testing the movement before trying to lift a foot. It barely moved.
Perfect.
“I can kind of move my toes.”
“Oh, I am going to kill you,” Neeve grunted again as she pulled my arm over her shoulder, shifting most of my weight onto her. “Why the fuck are you this bad?”
I sucked in a breath. Neeve would not like what I had to say. “I phased through walls and a wooden beam… Oh, and I had to bring Severin into my void-form too.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” Neeve scoffed.
Phasing through a wall alone took considerable effort. But bringing another person or a large object with me could drain me to the point of collapse. It was one of the hardest things a Fury could do—nearly impossible.
Could they do it?
Of course.
