The Grim Reaper’s Lawyer

“I haven’t brushed my teeth yet,” I mumble from under my hand. He smirks and settles for kissing me on the cheek.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” he asks.

“That stupid reaper shooting me.”

He chuckles. “Yeah, then you passed out and some more reapers came in trying to take us. I fought them off, then teleported us here.”

I nod and reach for the food. I’m starving. This whole still-feeling-hunger thing, even though I’m dead, is not cool.

I lift the fry to my mouth and notice a tattoo on my wrist. I hold my arm up in front of me and look at it. It looks like a mini scythe.

“Why do I have this?” I ask.

“It’s one of the reaper’s tattoos. While you were knocked out, I went to the armory room at Eden and took an old mini machine to be able to put that on you. It will be temporary, but it gives you heightened strength, teleportation, and the ability to make yourself not visible to the human eye. You basically have all the powers of a reaper for a small amount of time. As the tattoo disappears, so will the abilities it gives you. The more you use it, the faster it will fade. So, use it only when you must.”

“Got it. Only when I need to.” I smile at him, then shove ten fries in my mouth.

His mouth curves upwards. He rubs my hair. “My perfect Joy,” he whispers. I swat his hand away. He knows I have a praise kink.

He laughs as he grabs the bag of food and sits next to me, taking out a burger and biting into it.

“Okay, what’s the plan?” I ask.

“I’m not sure yet. We still do not know who or what is behind this and why they are tracking us down. But I do know I can’t get in contact with Taevian.”

“What about Yirah?” I ask, hoping she is okay.

He shakes his head. “I don’t think we should involve her yet. We don’t know what is going on.”

I pull my bottom lip between my teeth then let go. “What if this has something to do with Joey? I mean you heard him as he was being dragged away. He said this was not the end of it.”

Aiden contemplates what I said for a moment. “What would he benefit from doing this? He’s not the type to do something without a reason.”

I shrug. “I have no idea. But they came to my apartment, so they must have been looking for me.”

“What did you do?”

I scoff. “Why must I have done something?”

He raises a brow. “You are always getting yourself into some trouble.”

“That’s a false statement. I do not always get myself into trouble.”

“Okay, then. You have a pattern of finding trouble,” he teases.

“Well, I didn’t do anything…this time.”

He moves our food to the bedside table and pulls us under the blankets. We are laying on our sides, facing each other. I realize I don’t know where we are.

“Where are we?” I ask curiously.

“New York,” he states, playing with one of my curls.

“Why New York?”

A gentle smile plays on his lips. “Because you like it.” My heart flutters. He remembers every little thing about me. I probably mentioned liking New York once.

I lean in and peck him on the lips. “I love you.”
