“I’ve been thinking of starting a matchmaking service,” she whispers, growing animated. “You and Sterling were my first attempt.”

Some people would be upset about a new friend meddling like that, and maybe I would have been a few months ago, but now it only makes me laugh. If Farrah was using her magic or whatever else she has at her disposal to bring us together… well, at least we’re together.

I’d never considered Farrah’s ambitions outside her work at the café, and she’s never mentioned them, but this makes so much sense for her.

“Seriously? That’s great, Farrah!” I giggle. “I hope you don’t expect payment for a service I was unaware of.”

“I don’t. Pinky promise.”

We lock our pinkies together.

I say, “But I’ll definitely give you a testimonial. We’re happy.”

Axel and his toddler daughter, Harlow, walk by us. To my surprise, Axel lifts a hand in greeting. He’s never been the most talkative guy—I only know his name through other people—but he smiles at Farrah.

Not too surprising, I guess. She’s friends with everyone.

Farrah waves right back. “Hi! Isn’t it too cold for you, little wolf?” Farrah bends down and pinches one of the toddler’s chubby, pink cheeks.

Axel sighs and rubs a hand over his face. “That’s the point. We’re trying to help her werewolf side kick in. Right now, she’s all witch.”

The little wolf is still bundled accordingly. I don’t know much about kids, but I’m not concerned.

“Then the plan is…?” Farrah lifts an eyebrow at him.

It’s a different side of Farrah than one I’ve seen, a little snappier, sassier. I tilt my head and watch them.

“Five-minute walks at a time,” he grumbles. “I don’t know.”

Farrah freezes, staring at Axel for several long moments. “That’s—um, a good plan.” She nods and loops her arm with mine, pulling me away. “See you around.”

The conversation seemed so normal right up to the end, and I give Farrah a confused look. They seemed friendly right up until the end. “What was that about? You don’t like werewolves?”

“No! I love them. I mean.” She shakes her head. “Axel wasn’t wearing his wedding ring.”

“Oh…” I nod. “Do you think something’s—”

“I don’t know, but I had to get out of there before I asked about it. I may be nosy, but even I have boundaries.”

“Surprising.” I squeeze her arm and laugh. “You didn’t have any with my love life.”

“That was different. My brother was involved.”

Right on cue, Sterling pulls up in his car, idling in the distance. He doesn’t rush us—never rushes me, waiting for Farrah and me to finish our walk. He’s been driving me to and from work for days. It’s easier. Saving gas. Getting to spend even more time with him.

“Go on then,” she says. “I’m sure he can’t wait to see you.”

I pout. “But I want to talk about your bad luck—”

“You’ve heard all about it.” She wrinkles her nose. “I think… maybe… I want to enter my hoe era.”

“Hoe era?” I echo, letting out a burst of laughter. “Oh, I fully support that. I lived my life in my hoe era, and let me tell you, it was fun.”

But it’s hilarious to hear lover girl, chronic dater Farrah, refer to her ‘hoe era.’

She nods adamantly. “You’ll give me tips?”

“I will. As many tips as you need. Tip number one: be safe.” I wink. “Let me know if you need a potion for that.”
