And I knew which one it was.
The moment stretched as we both panted and clung to each other. Greyson’s muscular body fit against mine in a way that I never could have anticipated. It felt right in a way that didn’t fit a casual vacation hookup, and I didn’t know what to do with that.
So, I pushed it to the back of my mind, unwilling to worry about anything while my limbs were jelly and satisfaction thrummed through me.
Greyson pulled out, staggering toward a trash can in the corner of the room. I couldn’t resist lifting my head to check out his firm ass as he removed the condom and dropped it into the trash. A lazy smile spread across my face, and Greyson’s own lips curved and something that I could only describe as primal contentment flashed across his face.
He was heading back to the bed when the sudden, jarring sound of someone pounding on the door of the bungalow broke into our peaceful moment. Greyson’s smile disappeared as his eyes shifted to the digital alarm clock on the nightstand.
“Fuck,” he muttered, reaching for his discarded boxers. “It’s later than I thought.”
I sat up, looking around the room for my own clothing while my brain slowly came back on board. After two back-to-back orgasms, it took a few seconds.
The knocking came again, followed by a loud, familiar voice that carried all the way to the bedroom. “Greyson! Open the door!”
That had to be his ex-wife. She didn’t sound as cheerful as she did when I saw her outside the resort, when she called him her husband, but the husky quality of her voice was unmistakable. I looked at Greyson, startled by the annoyed expression on his face.
“It’s Audrey,” he said in a low voice. “Stay quiet, okay?”
“Why?”
I matched his low tone, but I didn’t see why it was necessary. It was as if he didn’t want her to know I was here. But if they were divorced, why would he need to hide me?
“I want her to think I’m not here.”
I frowned as I started to pull my bikini back on. “Again I ask: why?”
“She’ll give me hell for hooking up with a stranger.”
I’d just tied my bikini top behind my back, and I was glad that I wasn’t completely exposed to him because his words brought on something that felt very close to shame.
“I see,” I said stiffly, and he paused in the act of pulling on his shirt to look at me. What I felt must have shown on my face because he dropped the shirt and rushed to stand in front of me, even as Audrey knocked yet again. She was certainly persistent.
“No, no, no. I didn’t mean that the way it sounded. I don’t think of you as a stranger, especially not after what we just did. But Audrey will see it that way, and she’ll be pissed. I just don’t want to have to deal with that while I’m supposed to be on vacation. I don’t want Christine to have to deal with it.”
Well, I guessed I could understand that.
“She must still have strong feelings for you.” I grabbed my dress from the floor, hurriedly pulling it on. Audrey was calling out for Greyson again, and I was starting to feel an urgency to get dressed.
Greyson scoffed. “Hardly. I told you that she liked being married to a bigwig in the NFL, and she’s still bitter about the divorce, but it’s not because she cares about me. It’s the lifestyle she misses.”
Greyson finally put his shirt on—which was a real shame—and moved closer, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. The gesture was unexpectedly affectionate, and I leaned into it.
“Don’t worry about Audrey. There are no feelings there.”
The knocking finally stopped, and Greyson let out a sigh, his shoulders relaxing.
“I guess she gave up on finding you here,” I said.
“For now. The woman is tenacious.”
“It sounds like you have some issues with her.”
He claimed they were only co-parents and nothing else, but I sensed it was more complicated than that. And that made sense. Raising kids probably was never a simple thing.
He sat down heavily on the end of the bed. “Audrey can be difficult. She’s been giving me a hard time about pretty much everything since the divorce.”
“Then, why did you agree to go on vacation with her? Couldn’t you have brought Christine on your own?”
