“What’s that mean?”
Jess smiled. “I’ve just noticed a few people in the wedding party seem to be… dating, I guess. Or rather, not dating, as the case may be. We’ll just have to see how it all works out.”
With that, she turned on her heel and continued into the resort, but I stood there for a moment, wondering what she was talking about. It seemed that she knew something I didn’t.
Deciding I had enough to figure out about my own potential relationship without worrying about anyone else’s, I headed in the opposite direction.
I knew that Audrey and Christine had a boat excursion this afternoon, and I hoped that meant that Greyson would be available to pick up where we left off this morning. My body was still buzzing with desire for him.
When I reached his bungalow, I knocked for a minute. Just when I thought he might not be there, the door opened, and he gave me a heart-stopping grin.
He’d been smiling more and more as I’d gotten to know him the last few days, and I liked it. It softened his rough edges.
“I’m not interrupting anything, am I?” I asked as I stepped inside.
“No, not at all. It just took me a minute to get to the door because I was on the back deck.”
With a hand on my lower back, he led me in that direction. There were plates of food on the patio table and the sight made my stomach rumble loudly enough for him to hear over the constant sound of the waves.
Greyson chuckled. “You hungry?”
I placed a hand on my stomach. “I guess so. I probably shouldn’t have skipped breakfast.”
“Well, sit down. You can have some lunch.”
“Oh, no. You don’t have to give me your food.”
“I ordered way too much food, anyway. You’ll be helping me out by eating some of it.”
There was quite a lot of food. Three ham sandwiches, fresh fruit, and a big lettuce salad. I would be full from eating less than half of it.
The pressure of his hand on my back increased as he guided me to the table, not giving me a chance to refuse again. Just like at the bar, he pulled out my chair for me, and I sat down.
He gave me a plate with one of the sandwiches and the sides, and we sat together quietly for a few minutes, eating and watching the waves roll in and out. The silence was comfortable, and it didn’t feel like I’d known him just a couple of days. I was at ease in a way that often took much longer to achieve.
“How was your spa day?” he asked as he polished off his second sandwich. For a man who seemed to have very little body fat, he sure could eat.
But I guessed that it took a lot to maintain all those muscles.
“It was nice,” I said, forcing myself to have an actual conversation instead of letting my mind linger on the way he looked shirtless. “I got a massage.”
His eyes turned heated in an instant. “I could’ve done that for you.”
“Oh, yeah? And you wouldn’t have gotten distracted by my naked body?”
“Of course not,” he lied. “I would be very appropriate. Chaste, even.”
“That’s a shame.”
That deep chuckle of his was quickly becoming my new favorite sound.
While we kept eating, he told me about going to the market with Christine. It sounded interesting, and I made a mental note to try to find time to check it out sometime over the next few days.
“I think she had fun,” he said, sitting back in his chair since he’d finished all the food on his plate. “I hope so, at least.”
I studied him for a moment, taking in the worried look in his eyes. “You’re not sure?”
He sighed. “Hell, I’m not sure about anything when it comes to parenthood. I don’t think anyone ever really is. We all just do our best from the moment our kids are born, and a lot of us screw up in some way or another.”
