It was her turn to groan. The thin fabric of her leggings did nothing to keep him from feeling her pulsating against his fingers, and when he barely touched her, she pressed against him.

He pushed his hand up between her legs, and she gasped. She grabbed his wrist, holding it in place firmly. Panting, she moved her hips, rubbing against his fingers with desperate urgency.

His blood roared in his veins. He kissed the side of her neck as she rode his hand, and when she moaned, he opened his mouth, biting her skin. That only got her going faster, and he couldn’t bear it.

He curled two of his fingers, pushing through the fabric, getting deep inside her. She screamed his name. He could tell she was getting close, and the idea made him dizzy.

“Fuck!” she cried, releasing his wrist. She pushed his hand away, turning to him.

“We need to go,” she said, face pink. Both their chests were heaving. “Or we’re never going to leave.”

Then she ran out the door.

He had no choice but to don his coat and follow, his body pulsing. He glanced down at his damp fingers and groaned.

Luckily, it was frigid enough outside to cool him down, everything covered in a thick layer of white. The storefronts looked gorgeous, but the roads were messy, though they looked clean enough to drive on.

Lucy used magic to dig her car out of a foot of snow, and they both got in. She turned the heat on high and began to drive, playing some music.

Her cheeks were still flushed. He couldn’t stop staring at her, watching the color darken as she noticed.

“Stop that,” she said, sounding nervous. “I’m driving.”

“I’m not doing anything,” he said, voice husky. His body still ached with unspent desire.

They successfully arrived back at Charles’s place, and once she’d pulled up the driveway, parking, she released a shaky breath.

“Luce,” he said, and when she turned to look at him, he grabbed her face and pulled her to him, devouring her lips. She responded with equal intensity, kissing him back hungrily.

He paused to take his glasses off, then he kissed her sweet and slow. She hummed, opening her mouth against his. Her tongue slipped into his mouth, and he deepened the kiss, eliciting a whimper from her.

His hands roamed down her neck to her breasts as her fingers twisted in his hair, tugging. He nipped her jaw, her throat, her collarbone as she struggled for breath.

He was a moment away from pulling her onto his lap when he regained a modicum of sense.

He needed to take her out first. It was bad manners, all this. He wasn’t going to fuck her for the first time in the car in broad daylight in front of his grandad’s house, no matter how much he wanted to.

And he wanted to. Desperately.

With a praiseworthy level of self-control, he broke away from her, catching his breath. He put his glasses on to find her mouth was swollen, lips red.

Suddenly, he was nervous, unsure if he should ask her out—he was afraid she wouldn’t want him, the way nobody ever seemed to want him. But he realized he was being silly. After the night and morning they’d had, it was clear she wanted him. She wouldn’t reject him.

Even as trepidation beat through him, he took a deep breath. “Do you want to get dinner together sometime?” he asked.

She froze, eyes wide. “What?” she asked, laughing. The sound was like a bucket of ice water being thrown over him. Shame spread across his chest.

He couldn’t bear to look at her. She swallowed and finally spoke. “I … I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

All the heat from moments before vanished. Instead, he was left feeling cold as the freezing temperature outside. He felt like a kid again, unwanted—always unwanted.

“Why?” he asked.

She looked away, nibbling at her bottom lip. “You’re leaving, aren’t you?”

“Leaving?” He stilled as he realized something.

Had she only done all this to try to get him to leave? So she could have the shop and Charles all to herself?
