I nearly jump out of my skin. Whipping my head around, I pin her with a glare sharp enough to cut glass. I’d completely forgotten she was still in the room. Which is honestly impressive, considering she’s been sitting there witnessing my entire downfall like my biggest hater.
Mika merely smiles over the rim of her cup. It’s the smile of a woman who has just watched her favorite villain walk straight into a trap and is thoroughly enjoying the show.
“You’re enjoying this,” I accuse.
“Immensely.”
“I really do hate you sometimes.”
“No, you don’t.”
Unfortunately, she’s right, too.
Mika rises gracefully, sets her cup aside, and gestures toward my walk-in closet.
“Better hurry.” She winks. “Your ice prince is waiting.”
I give her the most exaggerated, mocking smile I can manage.
“Very funny.”
“Thank you.”
She laughs, completely unrepentant, and strolls toward the door. Just before leaving, she glances back at me with that same infuriating grin. “Try not to give him your panties before dessert.”
“You’re so godamn annoying…”
Her laughter follows her into the hallway.
And then I’m finally alone.
Alone with my confusing thoughts.
And alone with a heart that has decided to abandon every shred of self-preservation it has ever possessed.
A date?
My heart perks up at the thought, practically wagging its metaphorical tail.
“We’re going on a date! You’ve thawed me out just in time!”
My brain, meanwhile, goes feral.
What if dinner is awkward?
What if I say something stupid?
What if he smiles at me again and I make a complete fool out of myself?
And worse.
What if he doesn’t kiss me?
My heart makes a dreamy little sigh.
My brain starts drafting an escape plan.
I push myself off the bed and walk towards the closet.
