Sweet Nightmare

“Pinky promise,” I say through gritted teeth.

“With what on top?” she presses.

“Goodbye, Stevie.”

I end the call and slip my phone back into my coat pocket.

“How cute,” Mika says, falling into step beside me.

I glance at her.

“Say one more word, and it’ll be the last thing you ever hear.”

She grins.

“Promises, promises.”

I make a mental note to have her removed from my will.

Not that she’s in it.

But the gesture feels appropriate.

“Miss Volpe?”

The driver approaches us with a kind smile.

I give him a small nod.

He gestures toward the waiting black SUV before opening the rear door for us.

“Welcome to South Korea.”

A sudden gust of wind whips my hair in every direction, prompting Mika to unleash a string of curses that would make my psychopath Uncle Enzo blush.

A shiver runs down my spine, but not from the cold. It’s the same strange sensation that’s been following me since I left home. I’ve been trying—and failing miserably—to figure out what it means.

It doesn’t feel like something bad.

It feels like something inevitable.

Shaking off the feeling, I follow the driver and Mika into the SUV. The moment the door closes behind us, the outside world falls quiet, leaving only the soft hum of the engine and Mika’s ongoing complaints about the weather.

As the vehicle pulls away, I glance through the tinted window.

The aircraft disappears behind us, swallowed by the darkness and drifting snow.

And somehow, the feeling in my chest only grows stronger.

I have no way of knowing that I’m driving straight toward the one variable no amount of planning, preparation, or obsessive list-making could ever account for. The one man capable of turning my perfectly organized life into absolute chaos. The one man who could make me question every rule I’ve ever lived by.

Whether I want him to or not.

Apparently, our story is written in the stars and in every scar carved into his heart.

How unfortunate…

artemis will murder me!
