Ivy puts her hand against her heart.

“Dad’s Leica.”

“He said Donald might deny whatever happened aboard the Mariner’s Crown. He wanted proof.”

“The film Grandpa divided,” I whisper.

Mom nods.

“Daniel photographed the men aboard the ship.”

“And Simon was one of them.”

“I didn’t know that until now.”

Thomas wipes a hand across his face.

“James found Daniel’s camera in his car.”

Ivy turns toward him. “After the crash?”

“Yes.”

“The police didn’t take it as evidence?”

“The camera was hidden inside the spare-tire compartment.”

“Why would Dad put it there?”

“He knew someone was following him,” Mom says. “He called me from a pay phone after leaving Blackwater.”

My anger rises again.

“You spoke to him?”

“For less than a minute.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me not to trust anyone wearing a uniform.”

Keating’s expression tightens.

“He said there were Coast Guard officers aboard the Mariner’s Crown?” he asks.

“He didn’t explain. He told me to take the girls to James’s house and wait for him.”

“But he never arrived,” Hazel whispers.

Mom reaches for her.

“No.”

Hazel kneels beside Mom’s chair and presses her face against her shoulder.

Mom holds her the way she must have held all of us that night.

“What happened to the car?” I ask.
