“Simon believes a lot of things that aren’t true.”

Ben watches us through the monitor.

“I’ll be beneath the ship before Calle reaches the dock,” he tells Mom.

“You promise?”

“Yes.”

“You promised my daughter you would come back.”

“I intend to keep both promises.”

Mom looks at me for a long moment.

Then she pulls me into her arms.

“You are too much like your father.”

“I thought I was like Grandpa.”

“That’s what frightens me.”

When she releases me, Storm, Willow, Ivy and Hazel are waiting.

Storm hugs me first.

“You’d better not let them leave without us.”

“I’m going to an abandoned dock filled with federal agents.”

“Exactly. You’ll need someone sensible.”

Ward coughs behind her.

Storm points at him without turning around.

“Not one word.”

Willow puts her arms around both of us.

Ivy joins her.

Then Hazel.

The five of us hold on to one another while Mom wraps her arms around all of us.

For a moment, I am thirteen again.

Dad is gone.

Grandpa is furious.

Mom is trying to keep us together while everything around us breaks.

This time, I’m not a child waiting for someone else to find the truth.

This time, we know where the men who killed Dad are going.
