“That’s true.” I grimace. “When I proposed, I didn’t actually think of this bit.”
“Of course you didn’t.”
I glare at him and try to gather some small shred of my dignity. “I just wanted to see him with my ring on his finger.”
He pats my head gently. “Well, that’s really all it is when you think about it.”
“What? Marriage?”
He nods. “It’s just rings on your fingers. You’ve really been married since the moment he turned up on your ghost tour. You were a goner from that moment.”
“Before then. When he exposed himself to me.”
His lip twitches. “Such a romantic story. How on earth could I top that with a speech?”
“Keep taking the piss and you might find out,” I say silkily. His mouth shuts with a snap and I smile. It dies as my belly squirms. “You really think it’ll be okay?”
He comes to sit next to me on the bed, and I lean into him, feeling his warm strength against me. We’ve sat like this so many times in squats and on park benches, on pavements and in doorways. It’s strange to think we’re both settled now and have our own homes. Strange and yet wonderful too.
He hugs me to him and presses a kiss into my hair. “I am absolutely positive that it will be okay.” The conviction in his voice rings out like a bell. “I have never met two people who were more meant to be. You won’t just be okay. You’ll be amazing.”
“I’m already that,” I say, but the snark is soft. “Thank you.”
He squeezes my hand. “Any time.”
He disappears to make a breakfast that I will never eat, and I shower quickly. When he reappears with a bacon sandwich in his hand, I’m dressed in my dark grey suit and staring at my reflection in the mirror.
“You’re already dressed,” he says.
I eye him. “Yes, something which I do every day. Not sure why you’re saying it in such a tone of revelation.”
“Are you going to do your hair?”
I frown, reaching up to touch it. “It is done.”
“Oh… okay.”
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing.”
Panic stirs. “Oh my god, am I getting married with terrible hair?”
“Blue.”
“No, it’ll be in the photos forever. And anyone who looks at it will wonder why Blue Billings got married with sex hair.”
He blinks. “How have you got sex hair? Levi stayed in a hotel last night.”
“We had to say goodbye to each other first.”
“With sex?”
I nod.
He says, “God, I bet you’re lethal at train stations and airports.”
I grimace. “What’s wrong with my hair?”
