Dock

What if we don’t make it to her in time?

What if she gets one of these stupid gold word bricks on the wall “in her memory”?

Fuck.

What if she dies and she doesn’t?

What if they don’t honor her like they should?

Like I should’ve.

How could this happen?

How could I not fucking see this coming?!

“Dock!” Flames shouts, somehow strides ahead of me. “Get your fucking head in this shit, dude!”

Right.

Gotta find Teach.

No matter what state she may be in.

“Found them!” Flames enthusiastically shouts and tries to tug open the door. “Why aren’t they open yet?”

“Takes a fucking sec,” gripes Dive from his end of the phone. “I know I make the shit look like magic but never forget.” A clank sound indicates we have access. “It’s not.”

Reaching his side leaves Bones a bit behind but rather than wait for him the way Flames waited for me, I press on.

Yell to our Misfit on the phone, “Which room?!”

“About half-”

Blood curdling screams echoing down the corridor unexpectedly interrupt his answer.

Spotting a nutmeg shaded, stretched out arm leaving behind a red trail during its disappearance around the corner has me desperately sprinting towards it, weapon drawn.

I don’t quite make it all the way there before the first round is poorly shot around the corner, driving me to slam my back against the wall to avoid being clipped. The second quickly follows, steering me to stay flush during my inching forward.

Too fast and I’ll catch a stray.

But fuckme.

Not fast enough?

She could bleed to death.

Assuming she’s not already.

An urge to blindly fire back into the area he’s unloading from gets overruled by a sharp whistle from the direction I came.

Bones motions for me to drop to the ground, crawl forward, curve and shoot up, theoretically missing my woman I assume is still on the ground.

And if she’s not?

I could still hit that asshole in the leg, crippling him, giving her a chance to dodge out of a kill shot.

Falling to my knees doesn’t occur a moment too soon.
