The Other Omega

My baby.

Suddenly, I desperately wanted to see it, even if Thaddeus had to point out every tiny part before I understood what I was looking at.

He enlarged the image again, then checked something beside it.

“You’re seventeen weeks and three days along.”

I was still trying to work out how seventeen weeks had happened without me noticing when Eira spoke.

“Nearly four months?” She looked from the display to me. “Wouldn’t her mates have recognised the change in her scent by now?”

“The change has only recently begun.”

“They’ll be able to smell that I’m pregnant?” I asked.

“Yes. Pregnancy changes an Omega’s scent in a particular way. Yours is still subtle, but I would expect your mates to recognise it within another week.”

Well, that gave me a deadline. I wanted to tell them myself, preferably before one of them leaned across the breakfast table, sniffed me and worked it out.

“Your medical records confirm that you haven’t had a heat,” Thaddeus continued. “That makes this pregnancy particularly unusual. We have no record of an Omega conceiving outside one.”

My smile faded a little.

“Does that mean something might be wrong with the baby?”

“No. It means we don’t yet understand how you conceived. That alone gives me no reason to believe your baby is unwell.”

“What do the scans say?”

“That the pregnancy is developing well. At present, I see nothing that gives me cause for concern.”

Some of the tightness left my shoulders, and I looked back at the display.

“Can I see the baby?”

“Of course.”

He adjusted the image until it filled more of the space above me, then pointed to a tiny shape.

“This is Baby One.”

I looked at him instead of where he was pointing.

“What do you mean, baby one?”

“There are two,” he said gently, moving his finger to another shape beside the first. “This is Baby Two.”

“Twins?”

“Yes.”

Eira caught my hand as I turned towards her. Her eyes were full of tears again, and I held on while I looked back at the babies. Now that he’d shown me where they were, I could actually make out two separate little shapes.

“And they’re both okay?”

“Both appear to be developing well.”

I let out the breath I’d been holding and squeezed Eira’s hand. I’d barely managed to get used to there being one baby inside me, and now I was supposed to look at two of them at the same time and act normal.
