“Okay. I’m listening.”
“I know someone who just left an abusive marriage. They had a prenup that protected everything he earned and owned before the marriage.”
“So, he’s wealthy.”
“Yes.”
“And does this someone of yours have a problem with the prenup?”
“Not at all. She wants nothing to do with him. She doesn’t want a dime.”
“Interesting. Most men would be jumping for joy at that. But you’re here, talking to an attorney. And not just any attorney. So, what’s the rest of the story?”
“This woman has had several near-death experiences since leaving him.”
“And you think it’s the husband.”
“Yes. I’m almost positive after today.”
“What happened today?”
“While something can be said for him not wanting to let her go because he has control issues, trying to kill her made me think there’s some other reason.”
“Reasonable assumption. What did you uncover?”
“He is working providing the money to a shaky loan shark.”
“Ah,” Ethan said, leaning back and nodding. “I see it now.”
“What do you see?”
“If this man is being pushed into a divorce, prenup or not, there is going to be discovery so the court knows what this woman is owed for her time served in this marriage.”
“That’s exactly what I was thinking.”
“Depending on how rich he is, I can see some men thinking that’s worth dying for.”
“Yeah, that’s where my head is at.”
“So what is the question you have for me?”
“Right. I was wondering if there is a way for her to get this divorce without them needing to do discovery.”
“It’s not done often, but there is some precedent for the two of them negotiating a settlement before formal discovery. If both parties agree, they may be able to resolve the divorce without extensive depositions. It’s not foolproof. Sometimes financial disclosures can still apply. But if all is… amicable, it can work.”
I sat back, nodding.
“Do you need an attorney?”
“She has a lawyer. But we’ll see how he responds to this.”
“Or you can let her get her fair share of the marital assets. I’m assuming you are dating this woman. I’ve been led to believe the Henchmen can take care of their own.”
We could.
I could.
But depending on how long Perry dragged this shit out, that could require a long lockdown for her. Even after, I wasn’t sure he could ever truly let her go.
