“I have to ask Ethan about that. But I figure it will either go one of two ways: either you get everything, or you get what you are entitled to with the terms of the prenup.”

“I can divorce someone who is missing?”

“I would think so. This is Jersey. The law can’t force you to stay married to someone. Not even if they are MIA.”

“But you said he’s involved in crime. What happens to that money?”

“I’m not an expert, but if your lawyer uncovers the dirty money—and that’s a big if depending on how hard he’s looking and how good Perry was at washing it—then there will be a separate investigation into that. In the end, the law will seize anything obtained through crime. The rest of the estate—after the prenup—would likely go to you.”

“This is all so messy.”

I’d give her that.

“Yeah. But it’s not going to go on forever, either. The missing person thing, that would blow over in a few weeks. Cops have more important things to do than search for some guy who might have walked away from his life. Especially if there is no family pressuring them.

“The divorce, obviously, will take longer. Especially with an investigation. But your life goes on in the meantime.”

“Life going on sounds good. Even if it means more lawyer fees.”

“It will, but you’re also safe now. You can choose to switch from gig work to a normal job if you want.”

And little by little, I’d like to help her with that. But it was too soon to be making declarations like that.

Not long after, her mom came out of the bathroom, handing me the bag of bloody clothes and taking Georgie with her for a walk.

Which meant it was time for me to help Briggs move the body, then work on deep cleaning the floor.

I wanted Dotty to change it out eventually, but when you did too much shady shit all at once, it made even blind neighbors and guys who were high on some substance or another start to pay attention.

So we’d clean it really well for now. Then, little by little, Dotty would start working on some house upgrades. Floor first. Paint. A new deck out back. When you just changed the floor, shit looked suspicious. But if the whole place was getting a facelift, that was a lot more normal.

“I’ll turn off his phone. After we deal with the body,” Spike said, many hours of cleaning later. “I will head back toward the vicinity of the guy’s house and make some calls to Fred. Then I will do the same tomorrow, near his work. Then that night, I’ll drop it off in the car. We’ll be fully done then. And he will still seem like he was alive after talking to Dotty.”

“You thought of everything,” I said, nodding. “Thank you. I owe you two for handling the body.”

“Nah,” Spike said, shrugging. “I’m looking forward to a road trip. And this fuck is wetting himself over some used bookstore down in South Jersey,” he said, nodding his head toward Briggs. “So we both owe you.”

They headed off after that.

Once they were gone, Georgie and I took her mom to the hospital for her wrist.

Then, to make sure she was all right, we went out to dinner before dropping her off back at home.

“It feels like I haven’t been here in ages,” Georgie said as we walked through the doors of the clubhouse, only to have her stiffen beside me when we walked in to find half the club gathered.

“Cain,” Reign said, shooting me a smirk as he looked between the two of us.

Seemed like someone just won a bet.

“Is this church again?”

“Unofficially, yeah,” Fallon said. “We need the blow-by-blow of what went down today. With Georgie, but also with Fred.”

“Does Georgie need to be here for this?”

“Nah.”

“Why don’t you go take a shower?” I suggested, lips close to her ear. “And put your clothes in a bag for me, too. I’ll be back after I fill them in.”
