I stood there as she turned the car over, backed out, offered me a shy wave, then pulled out of the driveway.
I exhaled hard as she disappeared, having a feeling I was already a lot deeper than I realized.
“Kinda regretting not throwing more money on that bet,” Reign said, making me turn to find him leaning against the clubhouse, arms crossed, shooting me a knowing smile.
Fuck.
Maybe those guys were right after all.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Georgie
Jill: 7am report. No creepy dudes.
Janet: 1pm report. Still no lurkers.
My phone was a running report from the true crime sisters, who were diligently keeping an eye on my room ever since the “little event” two days before.
I was of the mind that I’d probably just freaked out over nothing. Maybe he was with the guy who was staying next to me. Or was one of the many private investigators who snoop around the motel, looking to catch someone’s spouse doing something they shouldn’t while still technically married.
Hell, maybe that was what he was doing.
Snooping on me.
For Perry.
The thought stopped me dead, bare naked, one foot out of the shower.
Even if that was what he was doing at the motel, so what? Even if he knew about Cain, so what? Because I wasn’t trying to fight Perry for anything. And New Jersey was a no-fault state. Even if I’d been cheating on him left and right, that didn’t impact what I walked away with from the divorce.
I twisted my hair into a towel and reached for my lotion, embarrassed by the way my thoughts drifted to the idea of Cain’s hands all over me as I slathered it on.
When I finished and glanced at myself in the sweating mirror, my cheeks were flushed and my eyes heavy-lidded.
It was borderline obsessive how much I’d been thinking about him since our date.
I felt like a schoolgirl with her first crush.
Everything was new and exciting.
I actually got butterflies sometimes.
And all we did was kiss twice.
Which, honestly, was good. I wasn’t sure I was ready to just jump into bed with him. No matter how much I wanted to, as Jill put it, bounce up and down on him.
It was better to go slow.
The last time I’d rushed into things with someone, I’d missed all the red flags until it was too late.
I wanted to really get to know Cain before I got too emotionally invested.
Even if I wanted to believe I would never fall for another Perry again—someone with all the right words and all the wrong actions—the truth was, my confidence was pretty shattered. I didn’t trust myself like I wanted to. Yet.
It would come.
Until then, I was happy to take baby steps with Cain.
