Make or Break

London either didn’t register my reluctance or ignored it.

“We can hit a soul food place or the swankiest place in town. I don’t care, but there are places where your people won’t see us.”

“You just like that this is clandestine.”

“False. I despise that you’re hiding this. The way you look when you talk about him - nope, the world should see that. So when can I meet him?”

“How do I look when I talk about him?” I asked.

“I’m not sharing that.”

“London.”

She sighed. “I want to meet him. Set it up. Even if it’s at a McDonald’s.”

I gasped. “You’ll break your vow for this?”

That was pulling out the big guns for my friend. She never told me exactly why she avoided the fast food chain, just that she knew more about how everything worked than was good for the average customer.

“Yes. I’m serious about meeting him, but if you opt for my first employer, it’ll have to be a morning meet.”

It was the third week of January, and I hadn’t stopped spending time with Tundra. As much as I loved his Mom’s piece of paradise, we couldn’t go there now that his mother had returned from her cruise.

He’d settled into his apartment, and I was spending every other night there. The location couldn’t be beat since my brothers never went down the side streets surrounding his townhouse. Bonus, it was fifteen minutes from my place, not that I’d timed it last night or anything.

I’d totally timed that drive - door to door.

“Fine. I’ll see what he wants to do.”

“Public place, chickie.”

“Why?”

“Because it’ll be weird if I want to leave his apartment or your place after twenty minutes. Besides, people are different at home compared to out in public.”

I nodded. “You’re right about that. Are you planning to interrogate him?”

She sighed. “No, Mickayla. But since you brought up questioning…”

“Oh, here we go,” I muttered.

“Hear me out,” she implored.

“Shoot.”

“As your closest friend in town, it’s my duty to ask if you’re a rebound for him? Have you considered that?”

“London, it’s not like that,” I said.

“Are you sure? Because from where I’m sitting it looks like that, and it hasn’t even been a month.”

Even though she was my best friend and we shared pretty much everything, I couldn’t tell her that I was in love with this man. Or that I’d asked him to make me his in a way that was equal to marriage. It wasn’t that she would judge, it was how special that moment was to me and it wouldn’t seem special to someone who didn’t understand the MC culture.

At the same time, I couldn’t dismiss her question completely.

“I’m sure,” I said.

“I’m gonna trust you on that, Mick. But the other question I have is how old is he? You said he’s older, and I hate to stereotype, but is there even the remotest possibility that you’re a midlife crisis for him?”
