“Tall, maybe six six, long blond hair, pale as fuck. I swear to God he had horns.”
Couldn’t be Kai. He has black hair and was with us this morning, not to mention the visitor isn’t as tall.
“He was wearing sunglasses, too, but his eyes… When I walked in, I swear they were glowing,” Ben continues.
Chills crawl over my skin as my brain immediately thinks of one name.
“Alabaster,” I say without thinking.
“I don’t fucking know. I’ve never seen what he looks like. But this guy was creepy as hell, definitely not human.”
My mind runs over the possibilities. What information do I have? The Covenant are the only people after Calli, as far as I know.
“What kind of questions was he asking?”
“I’ll call you later; have your guy let me know if he got the encrypted locations. I’ve got to g—” He hangs up.
“Fuck!”
My mind races with worst-case scenarios: Alabaster is now directly involved, they somehow hired another being to find Calli, or the Covenant aren’t the only players in the game anymore.
You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Motherfucker.
I quickly move to the stairs, my steps heavy as I put my phone back in my pocket. I push Jack’s door open and see silhouettes of two men on the lounge chair in his room, facing his TV. The sounds of bullets and rustling echo off the walls. He’s playing COD with Kai…
“Fuck!” Kai yells.
“You suck at this, dude,” Jack says, laughing and patting Kai’s back.
I stand in the doorway and clear my throat. Jack turns his head toward me.
“What’s up, boss?” Jack asks with a carefree grin.
“What are you doing?” I ask, leaning my shoulder against the doorframe.
“Kicking this guy’s ass, do you need something?”
My brows furrow. Jack said he and Kai have met, but I certainly didn’t expect them to be so chummy with each other so soon.
“Yeah, I thought you were working,” I spit, biting the inside of my lip trying to keep the information minimal due to present company.
He starts a new game without turning his head. “The party moved to regroup. That Ben guy sent us the location this morning.”
In a step, I’m across the room, ripping the controller from Jack’s hand. I look at Kai.
“Get out,” I say bluntly.
I can see out of my peripheral vision that Kai is looking at me, his dark eyes piercing as he stands, chuckling under his breath. He pushes his black hair from his face. I wait until I hear the door close before I speak up.
“You heard from Ben and didn’t inform me?”
Jack sighs, stands, and makes his way to his desk. “We aren’t in a position to make any moves, boss—you’re still healing. For now what we need is more information, and a location isn’t much to go on.”
“I want to know when you get any information, do you understand?”
It feels like he doesn’t care, and that’s not like Jack.
As if I feel a confirmation to my suspicions in the air, I hold eye contact.
