I remembered what the old woman had told me. She'd said, "do whatever it takes to get in."

What had she meant by that?

I arrived at the house early. It was 8:55 p.m. when I arrived. I pulled my car over and waited. I hoped no patrol car would come by and spot me. Luckily none did.

At 9:10 I pulled back out on to the road. I timed my arrival at the guardhouse for exactly 9:13, just as it had been written on the card.

I drove up to the gate. I stopped my car. No one came out to meet me at first.

I noticed that a new guard had just come on shift. He was a boy, my age, perhaps nineteen or twenty. I was sure he was a college kid, and this was just a part-time job for him.

The previous guard, an old man, hobbled away toward the mansion, which I could see distantly up the shadowy driveway.

The boy came over to my car. I lowered the driver's side window. Now what?

The boy had freckles. He had a kind of all American goody-two-shoes look. Perfect teeth and a wide smile. He was so clean cut. I imagined he smelled like soap.

Did I mention he was fairly buff?

"Hello, ma'am," he said. "May I have your invitation please?"

"Invitation?" I whispered.

"You're a bit late, ma'am," he said, offhandedly. "Most the others arrived quite some time ago."

"They did?" I said.

"I just need to see your invitation," he said. "Then on you go."

I gripped the steering wheel hard. What was I supposed to do? If he turned me back now, I'd never meet the man in the shadows.

"Well, you see, that's just it," I said. "I kind of misplaced my...um...invitation. That's why I'm late."

The boy didn't say anything at first. He just looked at me, studying my face. Then his eyes traveled down to my breasts. They lingered there for a minute.

"I see," he said. "Well, we do have a procedure for cases just like this."

"You do?" I said, hopefully.

"Uh-huh," he said. "Just move your car up a bit, and pull it over just past the gatehouse."

I nodded to him. What did he have in mind? What was this procedure?

I drove the car just past the guard house and pulled it over under the shadows of some tall trees. I got out. The boy walked over to me.

He stood there looking at me. His eyes went up and down my figure. After which, his eyes briefly met mine. He smiled awkwardly at me.

"I guess you know the procedure?" he said.

I didn't say anything.

He fumbled in his pocket. He pulled out two paper packages. They were unmistakably condoms.

"Which do you like, cherry red or minty blue?" He asked.

Chapter 12

"Cherry red," I said.
