I could tell he must have been a party favorite. And he wasn't even engaging in sex!

Cherry got us nearer. And we milled around with the rest of the Baron's groupies until at last, we could get near him.

The Baron stopped short when he saw Cherry. His attraction to her was unmistakable. Mask or no mask, he knew exactly who she was.

"Oh, mon cheri, I look so forward to seeing you each year," he said.

He brought Cherry's hand up to his lips, and when he kissed the back of her hand, his lips lingered. And you could see the regret he felt as he let go.

"I have a fresh face for you to meet, Baron," she said. "We've christened her Tulip."

"Well, her name precedes her. I've had half a dozen people tell me of her deeds already," he said. "The Marquis. Indeed, that's quite a line to add to one's resume of promiscuity."

Then I stepped from behind Cherry. The Baron reached out and took my hand. He held it to his lips and he kissed it.

And then something happened.

He held my hand there far longer than he should have. He gazed so intently at my hand that it became very awkward. What was it he saw there?

Then when he lowered my hand, he looked into my eyes. Oh, those brilliant blue eyes of his. I knew those eyes.

And today, they were alive with shock.

Neither of us moved. Neither of us breathed.

"A business trip? This is your business trip?" I said. "You fucking asshole!"

I tore my hand away from his. Panicked I ran for the nearby door that led out to the wide outdoor patio.

Once outside, I found a banister and grabbed it for support. I could barely breathe. How could it be? It was impossible.

My daddy was the Baron.

Chapter 24

I gazed out into the darkness. Tears filled my eyes. My whole world had been turned upside down.

My daddy was sweet. He was the sweetest man in the world. Not some secret sexual pervert attending parties like this.

Oh, God, all those times he'd lied to me. When had it begun? When had he started coming to parties like this? Was it since my mother had died?

I felt faint. I felt like I could throw up. I felt my whole world reeling.

"Fuck," I said.

What was I going to do?

I heard someone walk up behind me.

"Fuck off," I said. "Just fuck off."

In a low whisper, I heard my name, "Molly."

Oh, shit, it was him. It was Daddy.

"Don't say my name here," I growled. "Not in this place. You call me that again, and I'll tell everyone at this goddam party of perverts who you really are."

"You don't think they already know?" He said. "These masks aren't much different from security blankets. They're simply a license to pretend, that's all."
