Did things have to happen the exact way we wanted them to happen in order for us to be happy? Or could we evolve past our desires?

Maybe I wanted something altogether different. For the first time, I realized that maybe what I'd wanted all along was family—only maybe not a family in the traditional sense of the word.

What a strange place to make such a realization!

I looked around the bathroom. There were plenty of fresh towels. The walk-in shower was massive and marble.

I took my mask off and laid it on the counter. I stepped into the shower. I turned on the water. It was only lukewarm. I increased its hotness until it was nearly scalding me.

I stood there for a long time, relaxing, thinking. Then I turned down the heat. I thoroughly cleaned myself. Lastly, I rinsed quickly in cold water.

I stepped out of the shower, found a large towel, and dried myself. I wrapped the towel around me then placed my mask back on.

I stepped back out into the bedroom. I could immediately here someone knocking on the door. I went to it.

"Who's there?" I said.

"It's just me, Cherry," said a voice. "Can we talk?"

I opened the door. Cherry stood there alone. She looked so radiant and beautiful. Daddy's first chosen girl.

"Come in," I said.

She came into the bedroom, and I shut the door immediately. I locked it.

Cherry smiled at me. Without a word, I leaned in. I kissed her on the lips. It was so sudden that it caught her off guard. Still, she quickly responded, returning the kiss.

When at last she broke away, she said, "what was that for?"

"Because I wanted to," I said.

Cherry smiled at me, almost teasingly.

"Your father wants to see you," she said.

"My step-father," I said, correcting her.

"Right," she said. "He wants to talk to you. Tulip, it's not my place to say so, and I don't really know you ..."

I leaned in, and I kissed her again. She almost resisted this time, but then she gave in quickly. It became a long, deep kiss.

When it ended, Cherry said, "what's gotten into my shy little girl?"

"I love you," I said.

She blinked at me.

"You're so cute," she said.

"But I mean it," I said. "I do. I love you."

"You don't even know me," she said. "I'm as wicked and dark as they come, Tulip. We all are here."

I shrugged.

"I love you," I said.

Cherry's eyes began to water. She quickly looked away. She blinked away any tears before I could see them.
