“Amy.” Colin’s voice held a note of caution.

She looked from me to him.

I never wanted you to be alone again, not when I could be there for you.

I never stopped wanting to be with you.

I can’t walk away from you.

All fucking lies.

“It was a game,” I said slowly. It wasn’t a question; it was a realization. He’d been trying to prove something to himself? To his sister? That was why it hadn’t been enough for us to just have sex and forget about it. He had to have me, to announce that he had gotten me, to prove his sick point… Bile rose in my throat.

“Oh my God!” Amy’s voice crumpled. “He’s the one, isn’t he? He’s the person you’ve been seeing, since…oh my God! Since…” Her mouth worked as she doubtless remembered all the nights I’d spent away since that first night at Wild Things. “You left with him, that night at the club.” She looked at Colin for help. “You said you met someone…but it was him.” Her eyes welled. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t think. Jesus! Daphne. I’m so sorry.”

I was a fool. I’m such a fool.

Amy took a step toward me. I shook my head and drew back from her. “Don’t.”

Colin’s voice was conciliatory. “Daphne…” he said calmly. “I’m sure she can explain.”

“Just fucking don’t,” I said, my voice sounding dead, even to my ears. “There’s nothing to explain. Fuck you Amy, and when you see your brother, tell him to go fuck himself.” I ignored her devastated expression and went into my room to start packing a bag.
