I hope that it is not too much to ask to understand the situation I’m in. I hope you can feel the elation towards the news I bear as much as I do. Please see the attached pictures I’ve sent to you.

Just know, whatever your decision, I will not judge you or expect you to take care of us. Thank you for giving me hope. I promise to take care of the peanuts.

Congratulations!

Yours, Cassandra

My skin breaks out in goose bumps, and with dread, I open the attachments. The pictures are from the ultrasound. I can see two small blobs huddled together in the womb.

A guttural sound escapes my throat. I fight emotions whirling, ready to rip me apart as I try to hold it in, but the anger breaks loose. I grab my desk and launch it towards the wall.

My father, along with Carl, charges into the office uninvited, and stand, gasping at the mess.

The despondent feeling in my chest seizes me. I wasted six weeks and I wasn’t there to help or support them. I look at my dad, begging him to understand. Noticing the turmoil, he turns to Carl, “Could you please leave us for a moment? Block the rest of the day for us.”

Sitting on the sofa in my office, which overlooks the city, I tell him about Cassandra and the twins. “I want out, Dad. They are worth a sacrifice.”

He lowers his silver head and nods at me. “If this is what you want, son.”

Satisfied, and a little surprised he agreed so quickly, I stand and pull him into a hug, feeling grateful he supports me.

Soon, Angel, I will be there with you!

Chapter 10

The Queen of her Kingdom

~Cassandra ~

Eighteen weeks

“Raine, we need one of these wardrobe units for Arianna.” When he says that, I don’t think he means to put her things in.

Arianna is challenging at this age.

“No, we don’t. I have enough storage,” she huffs. Even I can’t help but snicker at Rider’s jokes.

“The mess you leave in the room can be solved, removing the cause of that chaos.” My niece sticks her tongue out, and we all know he is dreaming of locking her in there.

Raine’s boyfriend is a skinny pal, with dark hair and stubble, and is keeping our moods high. He’s helping to assemble the flat storage units.

Today, my apartment’s cramped, with family helping me. I feel a heady rush, decorating my space. The banter makes us laugh and fill the space with positive vibes.

I forgot how good it is to hang out with them all.

A few weeks ago, Rider rewired the electricity. Beautiful new pendants now hang in the middle of the living room. The newly-installed modern space-saving kitchen furniture looks terrific as the colorful backsplash creates a striking contrast between kitchen units. A small island that turns into a four-seat eating area completes the look.

“It looks amazing, doesn’t it?” Raine brings me water and rolls her eyes, as she listens to the banter between Arianna and Rider ensuing few feet away from us.

Our team of five painted the apartment in Egyptian cotton off-white greyish latex paint that made the space much more open and less depressing. I bought a spacious and cozy corner sofa bed. Since I know the back pains will be my companion soon, I bought a new mattress, investing in the quality.

“Shit, be right back…”

I try to breathe in through sudden a heatwave that comes over me, as I grow nauseous. I dart to the bathroom to expel the dinner I ate earlier. With the final heave, I press my face to the shower wall, breathing through my nose and trying to disperse the weak feeling.

Feeling better, I stand up to wash my face and brush my teeth, but the toothpaste makes me sick again. I start heave again, just barely managing to reach the toilet bowl.

I hear a soft knock at the door as I flush the toilet. I sit on the floor with my legs drawn up to my chest, head resting on my knees.
