Let’s hope that he came here to make peace instead of war.

The walls start to close on me, as I begin to worry there may be a time Logan might consider taking my children away from me. My eyes fill with tears as I try to control my fear. Stubbornly, I press lips together, to not let him hear the cry lodged in my throat.

“Hey, are you ok? You look tired and pale. Let’s take a seat over there.”

Mistaking my distress, Logan finds a bench for us. Sitting next to me, he rubs my back, having no idea that the anxiety I feel is because of the power he has over me. I might lose all the fight if he decides I’m too dangerous for our twins.

Sandra’s memories try to flood my mind with poison. Terrified, I suck in a deep breath, trying to force her pain back. Locking away the past in its mental prison, I shift to meet Logan’s searching gaze.

“What are you doing here, Logan?” I am done with waiting.

“I came to apologize.” He seems to be looking for a way to explain. His features grow thoughtful. “You might not know, but after I got back to California, I found out that a woman I shortly dated got pregnant.”

I gasp, surprised to hear he is expecting more than just my babies. A phantom fist squeezes my heart.

He grasps my hands in his, trying to calm me down. “Larissa came to tell me, with the ultrasound pictures and dates matching. I told her she didn’t need to worry, that I would take care of the baby and provide her with financial support. I asked her to do DNA test just to confirm.” He pauses as he gets lost in his head.

“She told me that she would leave the country, so I would never see my child.” He shakes his head, as disbelief clings to him like a dark cloud.

“She would go clubbing while we combed the city. She seemed always forget to take her prenatal vitamins. Once, I found her using drugs. All these things made me scared of worse things happening to my kid. Larissa told me that she felt depressed and lonely.”

“Logan…” I feel my heart twist. His emerald eyes are dark with emotion.

“My brother, Leif, found out that she lost the baby one week after I left the States for the London meeting. The truth is, she wasn’t pregnant at the time she came forward with the news. But before this information reached me, she gave me an ultimatum. Either I marry her or she would go, with a made-up story, to the press that could have hurt my family’s business.” He looks at me, trying to make me understand.

“So, when you called, I was projecting a lot of the things I went through with her, onto you. I had no right to talk to you like that. I only ask you to understand and forgive me?”

He wears an expectant expression as I sit there, trying to digest everything he told me, still feeling like something is bothering me.

“Tell me the truth. Did you think I am an easy lay because I slept with you shortly after meeting you? Is that why you treated me so disrespectfully on the phone?” I try to force back my emotions.

“No, that never crossed my mind. I thought of you all the time. Honest

ly, you didn’t seem like any woman I ever met before. I’m sorry, Angel. I was so upset, thinking you were manipulative as Larissa, trying to use me and hurt my family. I was upset and angry.”

I look away, not able to let him see what he does to me. “That call crushed me. All this time, Logan, I thought you were quite amazing. This pregnancy is the brightest light in my life. I—” I choke up, not able to finish the thought.

Damn these hormones! I chastise myself as he draws me into his arms for comfort.

“Shhhh, I’m sorry, Cassandra, I really am. You are special to me too. I am really happy to be a father, you know?” He kisses my temple. “You need to know I’m not leaving. I’m here to be however you need me, Cassandra.”

He rubs my belly and cups my face. Our gazes meet in the dusk, surrounding us in a comfortable peace.

Chapter 12

Behind the Icy Walls

~Cassandra~

Twenty-five weeks

After our talk in the park, we make some adjustments. He insists on taking me to work, although I asked him not to, and he drives me in the shiny Lamborghini every day.

After noticing my reaction to the car, he finally demands an explanation. “Why do you hate her? She’s a wonderful, fast beast.” His puzzled expression causes me laugh until tears stream down my face, making him irritated and confused.

Of course, I have to explain. “It’s getting harder for my pregnant body to fit comfortably in the car, Logan. Also, my back hurts after the trip.”

The next morning, he picks me up in a family car.
