“You thought wrong.” Did he really think sleeping with her one time meant he could step in and be Po’s father? That he could tell her what to do? That somehow he had sway over her? That wasn’t how this was going to work.

“Po needs help. He does. I can give it to him. Last night should’ve shown you that there’s something here.”

Jun realized then with a shock that maybe last night hadn’t been what she’d thought at all. Was this all about him getting close to Po? She felt as though she’d been hit with a bucket of cold water. Had he used sex to manipulate her? So she’d do what he wanted about Po? Had seducing her just been a means of trying to keep a close relationship to the boy?

Inwardly, she almost scoffed at the thought, and yet the way he kept insisting he wanted to help Po gave her doubt. Suddenly, her suspicions flared. After all, he could have any woman on the island. Why her? And why his obsession with her child? That was what it was, wasn’t it? What was his angle? Her mind darted to the darkest corners of human nature and she realized she didn’t want to find out. But she was going to protect Po. Even if Kai meant well, he wasn’t the boy’s father.

“About last night,” she said. “I realize...it was a mistake.”

“A...mistake?” Hurt flickered in Kai’s eyes for a millisecond before it disappeared behind anger. Jun found she couldn’t look him in the face, so she studied the laces of his sneakers instead.

“I’m sorry for... It was unprofessional. I think we should just go back to...back to the rules.”

“The rules.” Kai snorted and crossed his arms across his muscled chest, which was covered in a faded T-shirt. She could feel him boring a hole into her head with his glare. She glanced up briefly and away again.

“Yes, the rules. No drinking. No junk food...”

“No sex.” Kai eyed her somberly.

She met his gaze and nodded. He stared for a long minute as if she were a puzzle he was trying to figure out. He pushed away from the wall and she took a step backward, worried that if he got closer, her resolve would melt away along with all her clothes. Even in that moment, he managed to look deliciously sexy, fire blazing in his eyes, his mouth a rigid line. How could she possibly think clearly when he was in the same room? How could she make a decision and stick to it when he was right there, daring her to change her mind?

There was such a fine line between anger and passion that she almost wanted to jump on him right there, wrap her legs around his waist and kiss the life out of him. She remembered the feel of his warm lips on her neck. She desperately wanted that feeling again. Which is why you can’t do this. Not with Kai. Not now.

Last night had been a one-time slipup. It wasn’t going to happen again. But Kai was so close, so touchable. She backed up and hit a stack of weights. They clanked together as she put her hands out to steady them. Kai loomed over her, putting one hand against the wall by her head. A half smile played at the corner of his lips as if he could read her thoughts, as if he knew exactly what she was imagining right at that moment. Suddenly, the balance of power tipped to his side, and she felt strangely, wildly vulnerable.

“You’re sure?”

She shifted uncomfortably beneath his gaze, wanting to look away but unable to do so.

“I...” She wasn’t sure. Ten seconds ago, she’d been adamant, but now, this close to Kai, his lips millimeters from hers, she was anything but certain.

“This is what you want?”

Jun’s mouth went dry. Was he asking if she wanted sex? Or if she didn’t want it? She’d lost all trains of logical thought, and all she could do was stare at his mouth.

Jun didn’t trust herself to speak, so she just nodded her head once, not sure what she was agreeing to and not caring as long as it meant she could taste him once more.

Kai leaned in, kissing her roughly. Her whole body responded, as if primed just for this, made expressly for this purpose. Any hesitation she had melted as she tasted him, that perfect, warm sweetness that brought all the memories of her bed the night before tumbling back into her brain. Before she could come to her senses, she’d already wrapped her hands into his hair at the nape of his neck, already hungrily answered his kiss with a want she hadn’t known she had. She pressed her body into his, her lower belly on fire with need, and she realized then that if he pulled off her clothes, she would let him take her again, right there on the floor. His hands roamed down her waist, clutching her hips in a way that made her groan. He pulled her close to him, and she felt his hard body against hers, and all she could imagine was the perfect way they had fit together last night.
