“Hey!”

Jun grabbed a throw pillow and batted Kai over the head with it. He deflected the blow easily with his arm.

“I give you a day at most until I start love-shaming you.”

“Love-shaming?”

“I keep saying ‘I love you’ loudly and often in public until you answer me properly.”

“That’s blackmail.” Jun’s eyes gleamed as she thwacked him in the head with the pillow again.

“That’s it, missy.” He whipped the pillow out of her hands and tossed it across the room as he pounced on top of her and pinned her arms above her head. She struggled, but she laughed at the same time. He kissed Jun until she stopped fighting him. He knew she cared for him. He was going to be patient and wait her out. If she hadn’t figured out she loved him yet, then he’d wait until she did.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

JUN STILL FELT as if she’d been the most irresponsible woman on the face of the earth. She couldn’t believe she’d just gone with the moment, not thinking of the repercussions. She hadn’t done that since her brief fling with Po’s dad, and it had ended with her being a single mom, disowned by her own mother.

Did she never learn?

The hot water from the shower cascaded over her head as she rinsed away what was left of their little tryst, knowing that the soap and water would do nothing to derail whatever was happening inside her body.

It’s probably already too late. In a panic, she tried to quickly calculate her cycle in her head.

Kai took it so nonchalantly, so easily.

Then again, he’s not the one who has to have a baby, if it comes to that. Jun remembered the indifferent voice on the other end of the long-distance call to Po’s father, the one where he outright denied it could be his, said she must’ve slept with someone else in the six weeks since they’d been together. She’d only ever slept with one person. It couldn’t have been anyone else’s. Dante had taken advantage of her innocence back then. Told her he’d pull out in time. Told her not to worry—he did this all the time.

And maybe he did. Maybe he knocked up women in every city he visited. Jun imagined a legion of Po’s half brothers and sisters living across the country. The man had challenged her to prove Po was his, which meant she’d have had to go to court and force him to take a paternity test. Jun hadn’t had that kind of money then. Besides, she’d wanted to make it on her own. She was never going to beg anyone for help.

Now here you are again. The hot water fogged up the bathroom mirror and the smoky glass door, and sent up steam from the five rotating shower nozzles. The gleaming marble tile intersecting with the small glass rectangles seemed like something belonging in a movie, as did the enormous Jacuzzi tub in the corner of the massive bathroom. Jun inspected the expensive sweet-smelling shampoo in the stainless-steel rack and sighed. She could get used to this: fluffy new towels, sparkling bathrooms, fancy shampoo.

Kai said he loved her. Did he? Or was that something he said to every woman he undressed in his bedroom?

She thought he was different from Po’s father, yet she wasn’t sure.

Jun closed her eyes and imagined for a moment what it would be like not to worry about money for once. She’d scraped by her whole life, fighting for every cent she earned. What would happen if suddenly, overnight, she was rich? She’d never even considered it a possibility before, but now, in Kai’s posh condo, she knew she could get used to that kind of luxury. The question was, should she?

But his money and his fancy houses weren’t why she’d let Kai come in her, and she knew that. She’d wanted him to as much as he had, and that thought scared her to her core.

“Knock, knock.” Kai opened the bathroom door and entered, letting a rush of cool air in. “Finished my phone call. It was my manager.”

“Oh,” Jun said. “Everything okay?”

“Just more fallout from YouTube.”

Jun heard the resignation in his voice. Sometime soon she needed to talk to him about how he had paid her too much, about how she wasn’t going to take money for a job she didn’t do.

And she realized with shock that she wanted to tell him to quit.
