Chapter One

Allen paced the waiting area, resisting the urge to go to the back and see what the doctors were doing to Nell. Deshanna was going to have to see him, and soon. Allen and Deshanna were never officially a couple; they just ending up in a fuckingship. The way Allen saw it, he fucked her whenever, and that was it. He didn’t think about her much after he ran into Nell again. She had called him a few times, but he never answered because he wasn’t fucking with her like that anymore. He didn’t even expect for her to be out at the restaurant tonight. She wasn’t the type of female you took out of the house, on dates, or to meet friends and family.

“Allen, what do you need me to do?” his homeboy, Fleck, asked him.

“Go to that bitch Deshanna’s house and sit. If she leaves, then I need to know where the hell she is. Don’t lose her either. If you lose her, then your ass is next,” Allen told him.

Fleck nodded and walked away.

“Allen, what the fuck you doing up here?” Pain asked as he came around the corner.

“Deshanna and Nell got in a fight at the restaurant tonight. The ambulance had to come get Nell, so I’m here until I find out what’s going on with her. I called her people so they can come up here,” Allen told Pain. Pain looked at him in a funny way. “What’s the problem?” Allen asked.

“I thought you weren’t dealing with Deshanna on that level. What changed? Oh, and just a heads-up, Nell’s mom is a straight up bitch. She’s old and ignorant as fuck. I’ve had to stop myself from shooting her ass in the head plenty of times,” Pain told him.

“I’m not anywhere near the ‘check the female I’m with level’ with Deshanna’s ass. She doesn’t need to worry about who I’m with while she out here fucking with other niggas. As for Nell’s mama, I’m not even pressed about her. As long as she don’t put her hands on me, I could give no fucks about what she says. My only priority is Nell on any day,” Allen said.

Pain just nodded. He knew that Allen was gonna continue to be the gentleman for as long as he could. On the other hand, Pain knew it would only be a matter of time before Allen choked the shit out of her.

“What’s going on with Nikki?” Allen asked Pain.

“Nikki is still alive. The baby is still hanging in there,” Pain answered.

“Is she going to stay with you when she gets out of here? I know you’re gonna want to keep an eye on her while she waiting to go to court,” Allen said.

“Fuck no. She’s gonna have a nurse come to her condo and help her out. I already have it set up to where the nurse will text me updates so I won’t have to talk to Nikki at all if I can help it,” Pain said.

Allen could only shake his head at his friend. He was amazed every time he thought about the situation his dude had put himself in. Pain was on some reality TV type of shit right now.

“I’m gonna head back up here to the room with the baby and shit. I’ll hit you up to see how shit is with Nell later. Keep ya head on straight, nigga,” Pain told him as he gave him some dap.

“What the hell happened to my daughter?” Aunt La-La screamed at Allen.

She burst into the waiting room like she was a damn category five hurricane. All eyes went directly to her as she stomped toward Allen with hell in her eyes. Pain shook his head and left the room.

“She got into a fight in the bathroom while we were on our date,” he answered.

He wasn’t in the mood for Nell’s mother and her over the top shit tonight. He was already on edge with Nell being in the hospital. Deshanna wasn’t something he was worried about right now because he had eyes on her ass. She would definitely be his first stop after he got the update on Nell.

“Just like that, huh? All nonchalant and shit. You don’t give a shit about my child because if you did, your ass would be out there looking for the bitch who did this shit. In my day, if something happened to your girlfriend on your watch, it was your fucking responsibility to rectify the shit. Y’all young niggas got the game fucked up,” Aunt La-La fussed even louder, causing all eyes to be on them.

“La, pipe down with all that extra shit. You can’t call this man out without knowing what’s going on. Sit your ass down somewhere before you get us put out of here,” Laura said to her sister.

She was only half way getting through to her sister. La-La wanted answers, and the sight of Allen standing there with his hands in his pockets was pissing her off more with each passing minute.

“You may take up for the person who hurt your child, but not me. I don’t give a shit who the fuck it is. If you come for mine, I’m coming at your ass full blast,” La-La said, making sure to look at Allen as she said the last part.

“Fuck it, bring that hot shit on then, you bootleg ass Madea,” Allen told her with so much calm in his voice that it was scary.

“Don’t tempt me, motherfucker,” La- La said.

“Hold the fuck up a minute. What the hell she talking about you taking up for the person who hurt your child?” Murder said so loud that the ground shook.

Everyone looked up. There was so much going on with the verbal warfare between Allen and La-La that no one saw Murder and Lawrynn come in the room. All eyes were on Laura. She glanced over at her sister, just for La-La to roll her eyes in response.

“It’s not how it sounds. There were some things that happened to her when she was younger,” Laura tried to explain.

“Did Lawrynn do whatever it was?” Murder asked, crossing his arms across his chest.

“No, it was her out of town family,” Laura answered.

“So, you know what happened and who did it, but you’re still defending this chick after she took your daughter’s sight?” Murder asked.

“It’s only temporary. Everything will work out,” Laura said, sounding unsure of the words that were coming out of her own mouth.

“Bitch, you know you done fucked up, right?” Murder said with an evil chuckle.

“Watch your mouth when you’re talking to me. I’m still your girlfriend’s mother,” Laura said in an elevated tone.

Murder walked over to her slowly until he was face to face with her.

“Fuck you and the doctor that helped you deliver Law Baby. You’re siding with that bitch, but you want respect. Go get it from her drive-thru pussy having ass. If you’re with her then you’re against my wife. If you’re against my wife, then you’re against me. I might not kill you, but watch ya fucking back, old lady. A mother protects her child and gets at anybody who harms their child. You’re standing here looking at her with fucking bandages on her eyes, but you talking ’bout some shit that happened eons ago.

“I don’t give a shit if she was gang banged at a damn retirement home, none of that had shit to do with Lawrynn. She should’ve been throwing shit in their faces not hers. You didn’t tell her that shit, though, I bet. God forgives, but Murder don’t. Remember that shit, bitch. You’re on my list now. Welcome to the club. Lawrynn, it’s up to you how you deal with her from here on out, but don’t expect me to acknowled

ge her ass anymore,” Murder said and walked over to his seat.

Laura looked at Lawrynn sitting in her wheelchair with her right leg rapidly moving up and down. The tears were leaking from under the bandages. She slowly walked over to her daughter. She could see that her child was hurt by hearing that she was defending Nikki, but Nikki was family too.

“Lawrynn, you have to understand. I was only trying to find out,” Laura tried to explain to her daughter.

“I can hear that you’re coming closer to me. Don’t do that. I haven’t done anything to that damn girl. How can you defend her? On top that, you’re doing it right here in front of everybody like you and her are in the right. Just go sit over there somewhere, Laura, act like I’m not even here,” Lawrynn said to her mother.

“LAURA? Young lady, don’t call me by my first name. I’m still your mother. Don’t make me kick your ass in here today. Show me some fucking respect,” she yelled at her daughter.

She was scared to silence when she heard the clicking of a gun behind her. Her eyes got wide as she turned around to see Murder standing behind her with his gun drawn.

“I don’t know if you realize it or not, but Murder isn’t just a nickname. You might want to go home, go to sleep, and try to start the day over again. If you keep going on this route, Law’s gonna hate my ass by the end of the day. This is your last warning. A nigga like me only got one rule in this murder shit. I don’t kill nobody under the age of sixteen, and your old ass done been sixteen a bunch of times. I’m trying real hard not to have my wife hear me kill her mama, but you’re pushing it, bitch,” Murder said.

The room was quiet for what seemed like an hour until the sound of someone clearing their throat caused everyone to look up.

“Is everything alright in here?” the doctor asked.

He wasn’t an old, white guy, which Murder thanked the lord for. He was a middle-aged brown skinned black man. “Young man, do you have to have that out like that in the hospital?” he asked Murder.

Murder looked up then slowly put the gun away.
