Nikki laughed and started clapping. She looked between the two of them on the other side of the glass.

“You don’t have anything to say, or should I say perform? Just like Lawrynn, you love being the center of attention,” Nikki said to Nell.

“Nope,” Nell said, making sure to make the popping sound for the end of the word. “Your bitter ass just better be glad that this thick ass piece of glass and all these fucking cops are here to stop me from beating the shit out of you. Lawrynn is the talker; you should remember that when you try to pop off over this way. Ain’t shit changed with us. You’re still the hoe ass cousin in my book. I just came for her, not your ass. Don’t sit over there getting all cocky and shit. Remember, your dumb ass is in jail, not us. You gotta fuck hot dogs and sausages and shit while we’re out here living our best life and riding on two dicks that didn’t fall for your public pussy ass,” Nell said, still sitting at the table talking calm as ever.

“Fuck you,” Nikki told her.

“No thanks, hoe,” Nell said and gave her the middle finger.

“Are you done here? Y’all could’ve stayed home instead of coming to talk to me about all this bullshit. You’re my sister, whoopty fucking do. Ain’t nothing changed. Sorry, not sorry, sis,” Nikki said.

“I hope and pray that you suffer while you’re in this damn place. I wish you would get gang raped by a bunch of built, bearded bitches. You’re too fucking evil to admit you’re wrong or say you’re sorry for the shit that you’ve done. I would say god bless your soul, but instead, I’ll say I know the devil has your spot saved at his dinner table. Stupid ass hoe,” Nell said. She was tired of being there with Nikki not even showing the smallest amount of remorse for what she did. “I’ll be in the car,” she said as she stomped her way out of the visiting area.

“You’re still here?” Nikki asked Lawrynn.

“I love you because you’re my sister. I hate you because you’re a hateful, evil bitch. I hope you enjoy your stay,” Lawrynn said before getting up to walk away.

For once, Nikki did feel something as she watched Lawrynn walk away. She just didn’t know what it was.

Nikki had been on pens and needles for the past few days. It wasn’t that she was being harassed or even challenged because she wasn’t. No one had said a bad word to her. She was thankful, but at the same time, she was skeptical about why she was being treated this way. It wasn’t like her name held any weight outside of the jail walls. There was no reason for her to be treated nicely.

She had seen a female get raped in the showers yesterday. It made her sick to her stomach to see it all go down in a room full of other women. Yet, no one moved to help the young lady. Nikki probably could’ve stepped in and stopped it, but then that would put the focus on her. That was the last thing she wanted.

Now she was sitting in the yard watching all the women interact. When she was free, she knew all about the women who were called studs, but seeing the lengths that some of the women went to just to be seen as the man in a lesbian relationship was eye opening. There were women in there that you wouldn’t know were women if they weren’t in a female jail. She hadn’t been able to figure out what was exactly in some of their shorts that they would randomly grip from time to time.

“New meat, you’ve been quiet lately. Are you okay?” Bertha asked Nikki as she sat beside her at the picnic table.

“I’m okay, just thinking about my court date coming up next month,” she said quietly.

“Do you have a lawyer, or do you have a bullshit ass public defender?” she asked.

“Public defender,” Nikki answered.

“Well, I guess you should get comfortable then. Those motherfuckers don’t try to help. It doesn’t matter if you’re innocent or guilty, your ass is gonna get hella time by the time court is over. How did your visit go yesterday? I was surprised when you said you had one. Who was it?” Bertha asked.

“My cousin, well my sister came yesterday. I was surprised to see her. I did a bunch of shit to her that I regret now. The rest of the family’s not fucking with me like that period. I did some shit that they can’t forgive. Life goes on, though,” Nikki said and hunched her shoulders.

“Maybe you should reach out to them. They could have a different outlook on things,” Bertha said.

She wanted to continue the conversation, but she felt the phone vibrating in her pocket. She got up and made her way to the nearest supply closet before she could call the number back.

“What up?” Murder answered.

“You tell me, cousin,” she said.

“Hey, cousin. Do whatever you feel about that problem we have. I know you like to get creative and shit,” Murder told her.

“Okay, so she don’t have to be moved permanently?” She asked just for clarification.

“All that shit is in your hands. I know what I would do if she was out here, but she ain’t, so have fun,” Murder said before ending the call.

Bertha walked out of the closet with a smile on her face. It had been a while since she’d had a toy. The last toy she had was released on good behavior a year earlier. She knew that she had to at least teach Nikki a lesson for whatever she had done to get on Murders bad side, but she wasn’t just gonna throw her to the wolves either. It was time for lessons to be taught, and she was up for being the teacher.

“Hey, Lopez,” Bertha called out.

Lopez was the cell block tough chick. Granted, Bertha wasn’t a punk, but Lopez would do anything for a pack of cigs and Twinkies.
